Is this 1846 Large cent a counterfeit?

The date looks all wrong to me.
What do you think?

Looks like a normal, authentic small date 1846 to me.

Looks real to me. I doubt that a coin like this one in that low of a grade would be a target of counterfeiters.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Unfortunately, there have been reports of fakes of many low value coins such as circulated Ike dollars, and low value 19th century foreign minors. A Large cent would be worth far more than those reported fakes. Low value is no longer a shield against fakes. If a fake cost 5 or 10 cents to make and can be sold for $1 or $5, there is decent profit in it, and it likely is being done.

I pulled this date off an nice pic for comparison. The one is much thinner and the 6 does not look like it was put on with a nice square paintbrush. It is tapered in places with a knob on the end...whereas mine is squared off the whole length of the digit.

Maybe it was hammered out flat or something

I just made a quick run-thru Natzger III and the N8 date is similar - really need whole coin so Late Date guys could check attribution.
The compare pick looked like N15.

just to clarify, the second pic (date only) is from a certified coin...not the one in question

    Here's the reverse

At first glance, I would have said it was a hand-cut die counterfeit...That date just looks wayyy too funky. However, I believe it is indeed an N8 (Or maybe an N10, depending on date position. An N10 is a R5-!). Here's an image of an N10 one from lagecents.com
