Morgan dollar: off center, double struck and PL

I think some here will find this pretty cool. This is a GSA 1884-cc graded 63PL in the holder. It is also labeled 25% o/c and double struck. Makes for some cool impressions on the coin. Not my coin but fun to look at.
eagle head and wings in the rim

Tailfeathers in the chest

Something behind liberty's mouth:

Liberty's hair in the rims:

I was hoping to find a CC mintmark in the wrong place but never found it........

If anyone understands it.........Could someone explain how this 25% is arrived at and is it the rim that causes the TPG to feel that this was double struck?

I have no idea where 25% came from seems like more to me. There are clearly 2 strikes on the coin.....

Do you not see the second strike???

Neat coin - I likey!

<< <i>Okay, thanks very much coinkid. I was expecting something far more dramatic. >>
You're welcome. Well, if the coin hadn't been struck a second time centered properly, it would have been more dramatic. But that second, on-center strike obliterated all but a few remnants of the original strike. But hey, then the GSA likely would have noticed it and it wouldn't have been released in the sale.

I'm puzzled here, to me it seems that the off center strike had to come second. The dentils are struck at the time of the obverse/reverse impression, and since some of the correct dentils are obliterated by the O/C strike, the O/C strike had to have come second.
<< <i>Actually, the first strike was in-collar and the second strike off-center and very weak. Something prevented the dies from approximating normally on the second strike so at their closest approach the dies were only able to contact the highest point of the coin -- the design rim and denticles. >>
It might better help to understand what Mike is saying if you realize that the design on the finished coin, for example the birds head, is incuse on the die.
edited to add - very cool coin.
It was a pretty impressive PL and easily a 4 I know
and maybe a 5 on a good day. Priced right, so I should
go back for it soon before someone else does.

I believe that is correct. If the first strike was off center, then the coin definitely would NOT fit in the collar for the second strike.

It's neat and expensive but not very dramatic as at first glace if it was in a dealers case next to other GSA dollars you could scan right over it and move on to the next coin.
I'm more impressed with blu62vette's images of this coin... then the coin itself!
Yet I too wouldn't mind finding one!
you could point out where the wings are and the tips of
the leaves from the wreath also where the denticals
would be.
very cool
repeated below the 4 at edge
