1962 Topps Willie Mays

I was just wondering why does the:

62 book $250 while the 61 is $100 the 60 is $120 the 63 is $150 (beckett june/july 10)

It's not like the 62 is a high # so why wouldnt it be in the $125 range also?

    Condition sensitive brown borders.

Just a hunch, but 60's and 61's mask smaller flaws better than the wood grain on the 62's or the colored bottom portion of the 63's. Probably the same reason that some 71's are worth than their 1970 counterparts.

Ok but the thing is the 61 and 62 Mantle both book $600 and are both low # series

Agreed. By "book" I assume you mean Beckett. Beckett's high price is based on NRMT/MT condition. 1960 and 61 NRMT/MT are easier to find than 1962s in the same condition.

Yes thats what i meant - by beckett high - so based on what you are saying why does the 61 and 62 mantle both book $600?

I thought Beckett used NM for all cards prior to 1980 in the price guide. Did they change something?

NM starts from 1973 and prior

Well then 62 Beckett would be NM or EX-MT not NM-MT.

The card is very prone to snow since Mays is standing in front of a dark background.

Beckett,sMR, or anything else is just a guess on what the demand for the card is. image

I think this is the scan of where it is "snowing" on Willie:

This set has been a real challenge completing in PSA 7+. I collected the cards as a kid so most of my raw set is G-EX and the wood grain really shows the wear. Once I bought my first PSA 7 to replace a card with writing on it back in '04, I couldn't believe how great the cards looked in NM. I was hooked on completing the set! Ninety-nine percent and counting...

Lets have a beckett burning like the guy in Florida who wanted to burn the Koran...think we will make CNN?
My crazy school district that I work at had a book burning in the 70s....Went all the way to the supreme court...Island Trees vs Pico..wanted books band from the library shelf.....slaughter house 5 was one of the books.

Don't forget the smudge often found by Willie's name or the thick black line often seen on the bottom edge - like the snow, each makes finding a nice copy tougher. Hard to avoid all three from the factory -- then the condition sensitive brown borders kick in. $250 for a nice one isn't bad at all.

This is a very tough Mays to find due to what has already been said. The snow is generally always a problem in the photo itself and PSA kills the grade due to printing problems. Hence the very low pop on PSA 8's. If you think this is tough, you should try to land a 1962 Topps Frank Robinson.

Tough, tough card to find in high grade. It took a long while for me to locate this example, and it's one of the few cards that I never plan to part with.

Even that PSA 6 is a pretty nice card - well-centered and nice eye appeal except the snow.

But, man, that PSA 8 is beautiful.
