Extra Inverted S on Presidential Dollar Edge - Explaination Please

This presidential dollar was supposedly found in a mint wrapped roll by a friend who asked if I could find out more about how this happened. Could someone please explain this extra inverted S on the edge of a presidental dollar? How did this happen?

    Is it raised or incuse?

    New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Looks like what a die clash would look like, but that doesn't make sense given how these are made.

    I don't know... but looks like something odd beneath the 's' that appears to be damage of some sort.

    This happens when the edge of one coin with edge lettering is hit against another, probably in the edge lettering machine.

    looks "reversed"

    likely came in contact with a raised "S" on another coin. Look for an "S" of that size elsewhere on the coin.


    I have a William Henry Harrison, I think, that has the initials of the designer "reverse" stamped onto the edge from contact with another coin.

    Since the letter also looks reversed/mirrored image I also thought of the possibility of a clash with another coin, and I really thought the only place the S could have come from would be the S in Trust, but the force needed to make the letter is what perplexes me. The rest of the edge should have been flat in that area from the force needed to make the letter, shouldn't it?

    And any idea if issues with these coins like this are common or not?

    I've got one of the edge lettered dollars that has a ES on the edge. I'll have to find it to look at it again, but from what I can remember it to me it looked like it was a mirror impression of the ES in PRESIDENT.

    The coin hit against the incused letter in the edge of a second coin just right, and some of the metal from this coin extruded up a bit into that incused letter. There were many reports of such when the Presidential dollars first came out. I don't know if the occurence is less common now, or if people simply no longer bother to report it.

    This can be proved by the faint pattern of collar striations all around the edge, where the coin was struck in a slightly worn and rough collar. Note how the exact same pattern appears on the raised part of the embossed S. This proves that that area was struck in the collar first, and then raised up after the strike.

    Contact with another coin. If raised from another edge lettered coin. If set in from a raised letter on the obverse or reverse of another coin.

    These can be made easily with the help of a vice or hammer (I don't recommend this as it could hurt if you slip.) image
