One coin got a +, the other bagged. Answer in first post

Can you tell me which coin got a plus? Coin one or coin two?

Shocking, I know. Coins were sent on same sub, and I thought the 54 would be bagged and the O would get an AU grade. Both are nice coins and the large pics are unflattering. The slab shot shows the flash of the 54, which does enhance its appearance. Needless to say the 54-o will get cracked and sent in another day.

    I'm in the other camp...I say coin #1 got bagged. I think #2 looks more attractive based on the pics.

    Edited awhile later: after seeing the holders, I still think coin #2 looks more attractive than coin #1.

    The other coin was put in a genuine holder for cleaning. Keep guessing I will post full slab pics in a bit.

    we need to know the grade

    to be able to tell which coin is grade.7 or higher


    the plus isn't no eye appeal only like NGC - it is high end for the score


    did you mix up the photos?

    from what I see, I can make arguments for both being bagged - but photos can be deceptive

    Coin #2 is the crumbled die, it is struck from a heavily rusted and deteriorating die. that is why the date looks mushy.

    It looks like what is discribed here in PCGS's site. Pictures almost match identical.

    Without knowing the grade it is tough to say if it deserved the plus, of course. But I like it!

    My guess is that the first coin was the one which got bagged. And, in reply to one of the posts to this thread, I see no evidence that the second coin was whizzed.

    I see some hairlines in the first coin that leads me to believe that it may have been cleaned.

    I also rate the bagged coin (54-0) as having better overall surfaces than the other coin. The 54 has many more many hairlines and light scratches. The graders probably bagged it for rough surfaces/corrosion when they are in fact the natural surfaces. Don't feel bad, I've sent in gem seated halves from the Civil War period with striated planchets and they'd come back bagged sometimes for cleaning.

    I couldn't see giving the 54 a + unless the grade is no higher than AU50. The 54-0 is a tad lacking in the luster dept but what do you expect for a New Orleans mint with a crumbled die?

    They're both cleaned. I would like to see them in hand, I'm sure they are both nice regardless. I would love to see the New Orleans coin in hand especially. The crumpled die is way cool!!!

    Judging from the pictures this is another example of the graders giving more weight to luster and less weight to originality. IMHO this is unfortunate for circulated early silver type coins. I think they should consider giving a coin a bump for superior luster but I believe they are subtracting points for coins with average luster. I'm not knowledgable on this series but I do know that many coins minted at the New Orleans mint do not exibit the same type of luster found on philly products. They will get it right evenually but it can be frustating.
