For those folks that like to talk about guns and shooting better. Most of you havent been put in that situation, things like this happen so fast, you barely have time to react, they always have the drop on you period! I was glad to see he got a shot off myself. In my situation I had to fight them off at the door, only to be bashed in the head by the other guy I didnt see.
This is going happen to my local b+m one of these days and they are armed to the teeth in that place. I am thinking the store owner did not want to shoot them just scare them off or his adrenalin got the better of him..

I believe that. A buddy of mine (police officer) got into close hand-hand combat with guns involved while on duty and got shot (partner was killed, the person who did it is now on death row) - and still looks back at the whole situation as surreal. If a trained professional can't think straight in that situation, no one can.

Yes, your ability to be cool under fire is genetic and there is probably not much you can do to change it, other than practice the situations until they no longer cause adrenalin to flow. That is how pro golfers do it but not recommended for robbery victims. Dustin Johnson seemed to learn it this summer after reacting poorly at the US Open, he was able to keep his adrenalin under control at the PGA and then at Cog Hill.
You can judge for yourself how you react based on your driving skills. When something happens on the road causing a near miss do you freeze or react? Coming to work last week I turned onto a short one way stretch of road that has 2 curves in it--blind. Coming around the first curve I met a wrong way driver. I immediately made an evasive turn and realized I might not get out of the way in time so I floored it and just missed him. Both the turn and the acceleration happened before I could think. Knowing how to operate your weapon without thinking is something that you can learn a the range, like I've learned from years of driving including some racetrack time. Being able to stay cool in such a situation is something you either have or you don't.
BTW, my kids are at their Mom's for along weekend with grandma visiting. While they were away I bought a CO2 BB pistol (Sig Replica), made a target out of a used priority mail flat rate box stuffed with papers. I left the pistol on the kitchen counter and put the target on the hearth. When I'm in the kitchen waiting for the microwave or just walking by I load a half dozen bbs and take a few shots. Not the same as live fire but not bad simulation either.

Run of the mill Police Officers have very little skill in gun fights IMHO. What motivates most to be PO's arent what makes perfect cops, with exceptions of course. Trust me.

If you read through the comments on the article, there are a couple of bleeding hearts throwing in their two cents about how people shouldn't wish that the guy hadn't missed. I guess it would have been ok with them if the dealer had gotten plugged though.

You'd be surprised how unlikely it is to get shot when two people are exchanging gunfire at any distance.
Edited to add: Any distance refers to a distance greater than 25 feet. Frequenting a shooting range makes you more proficient at shooting at paper...
