I can't seem to make a gold CAC coin, has anyone here ever?
I have sent a bunch of rattlers and fatty's I thought were solid upgrade coins, all of them got the green bean but none a gold.
Has anyone made one yet?

The last Bowers and Merena auction had an amazing collection called the Fontaine Collection. The owner bought only 25 coins over his collecting lifetime and was obviously quite astute when it came to buying quality for the grade. Not only did *every* coin get CAC'd, three or four got the coveted gold CAC. 25 out of 25 for CAC must be close to a record.

I think the record is 26 out of 25.
<< <i>does it realy matter? >>
Oh YES it does!
In third grade in New Rochelle, New York, all the girls in my class got gold stickers for cursive writing! The boys never got gold stickers; only green or the dreaded red stickers. I am only now making up for lost time!
I now own at least 20 to 30 gold stickers but I still HUNGER FOR MORE OF THEM. I do not think my hunger for more of them has anything to do with coins!!!
SO IT REALLY DOES MATTER

No offense to RYK...but six out of how many tries?
If it's six out of, say, 10 tries, I say bravo! But that means that either he has a good eye, or his dealer does.
If it's six out of 100...well, that's different.

I can assure you he's not poor anymore! But maybe patient and picky.

I made 3 gold stickers on my only CAC gold submission. It was a large one with about 25% of the coins being ogh's, rattlers, and early NGC's. I was shocked when 40% of the older holders didn't even sticker! No matter, they bring about the same money in the old holders. CAC gold is no piece of cake, esp on MS65's and especially on $20's in higher grades. CAC MS65-67 Saints are off the chart in strictness.

I'm in the who cares and does it really matter camp. A coin is what it is and doesn't need a sticker to make it that.

what is the difference between the gold vs green sticker? (besides the obvious color)

Gold is meant to represent a coin that CAC believes has the characteristics of the next grade higher. They don't guarantee it, but certainly the coins I've seen with the gold sticker have been upgrade candidates.

The images of my AU55 $5 gold piece that "Gold Beaned" in no way capture the luster or eye appeal of this coin. I've seen 62s that look worse, much worse......
I have received 2 gold stickers in my submissions.

And I must say that submitting at Coinfest the last few years has been the greatest thing since forever. The two golds (MS65 and AU55):
There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who do not.
The stats quoted are from, I believe, a CAC press release. Does the CAC pop report even note gold beans or are they included simply as coins that have passed?
Oreville has 10-15% (!!!!!) of all the gold beans in existence. He must feel like Scrooge McDuck swimming around in his cubic mile of money. How many of them, if he would be so generous as to share the info, are for coins that CDN for over $1000, $5000. If I owned them, I would not ever list them individually. Hehehe.
If I owned them I would insist they get a special section in the auction catalogue, all sold together like they sell early proof sets.. Thermonuclear prices, a perfect storm (original meaning, not the Legend misinterpretation) for the buyers.
This year's Feb/March Bowers Baltomore sale had an early 1800's $2 1/2 PCGS 58 with a gold bean. I think it was an 1802/1 but my chagrin over not buying it may have caused me to forget the exact date. Superb gem 58 with great skin, beautiful rich orange color and better looking (naturlich) than any puttied or dipped 63 (even these are low-pop) I've seen. What we used to call 59/shot 62+. I was the 2nd underbidder on the book.
The gold bean is not a guarantee that CAC will buy the coin at the next higher grade. It's a consumer protection alert that says (my interpretation) "very PQ and/or gorgeous. Selling at any kind of reasonable price is a really serious mistake".
Someone check out Steve Duckor's 25c (pre + grading) and 50c sets as sold by Heritage in the past 1 1/2 years. He had a great eye, great advice, and count the gold beans. He had, in his 50c set, coins that were + and got no green bean.
Anyone here have a toned Morgan worth a point and half or more in value because of its color that came back from CAC with or without a gold bean? I'd love to see it, and I'm sure many others here would.
In the Bowers pre-ANA this year there was a key date 20th century silver coin in a PCGS AU-50 rattler that was a lock 58. A 63+ eye-appeal coin with pretty and wholesome toning, very clean surfaces, and a bit more rub than would please a a crackout artist though there's an outside chance that, if dipped, on a good day the 63 grade might result (oy!). Anyone, and I mean anyone, would grade it 55. Green bean that the buyer immediately goo-goned off. It held down the selling opportunities and added nothing to the "value" Buy the coin, not the holder, not the bean.
If you are old enough to cross the street without someone holding your hand, it's even safe to do it (look both ways) when the light is red.

My denominator is probably in the 75-100 range, but I do not have the data handy.
Four of the coins were gold coins in OGHs, one a gold coin in a blue PCGS holder, and one a seated coin in a blue PCGS holder.

At the ANA, CRO had a gold cacked MS65 81-S $1 that was colored and gorgeous. I don't know if they got a picture of it before it presumably sold.

<< <i>If you buy an NGC Green Bean and then downgrade it to PCGS, they will give it a gold. >>
You must be joking. This statement is absolutely not true. I have NEVER seen this happen. From what I have seen, NGC Green Bean coins downgraded by PCGS, will then earn another Green Bean. CAC has been very consistent in this regard.
I still believe CAC Gold Beans are mostly reserved for inexpensive coins, and certainly not those coins where the next price jump is considerable.

If most pattern issues are over-graded, then your no doubt accurately graded patterns (I know your impeccable eye as do many others) should be PQ for the grade. Or something like that.
Could it be that pattern specialists couldn't care less about what the holder says?
