Hello, I just bought a small group of US coins from a guy through the mail. He sent a few world coins along and I am not sure what a couple of them are.

Are any of these interesting at all? I love the huge coin... too bad about the hole. The dirty coin is from 1723 which I found intriguing.

    Well, the big one looks like an 8 Reales. I don't know enough about the series to tell you more than that without seeing the reverse. Plenty of forum members collect these, so someone else should chime in shortly.

    The next two are from Great Britain:
    1723 copper appears to be a Hibernia (halfpenny?). Again, just guessing the denomination based on relative size.

    The silver coin at top left is a William IV - (sixpence?)

    Last one is French. Probably 1 Franc, featuring the head of Ceres.


    Caveat: each of these designs are featured on different denominations (sizes). So without a point of reference, all of my guesses on the denominations could be completely off. Really need to see the reverse of each to give you better info.

    they're all interesting just for the history behind them alone... their retail value ranges around $10 to about $50 for the 8 reales. The bottom two coins both had an excellent chance of circulating in 1700s America. The 1723 Woods Hibernia copper coin is actually featured as a "U.S Colonial coin" in U.S coin guides even though it was struck for use in Ireland (rejected there, many sent over here).

    Both interesting responses, thanks! I love the idea that they could have been circulating here in colonial times. I am also a little surprised how big the 8R coin is, like a manhole cover. image
