Just started a type set of OGH gold

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,569 ✭✭✭✭✭
As a side project, I just started a type set of gold coins in PCGS old green holders. I know "buy the coin, not the holder", but I had to add some aspect to the set that would keep me from wanting to buy every nice coin I see. So it has to be a nice coin in an OGH.

I got the first two coins for the set today from a trusted dealer with a good eye...and they look really nice to me. But I'm a novice when it comes to gold.

What hints, tips, and advice can you give me?

Ya know, I did address the "buy the coin, not the holder" issue in my OP.

I would appreciate any OTHER advice or comments. Thanks.

Any series?? You can probably call it the over priced collection
as OGH coins can bring a hefty premium. I see them at every major show that I have been to so it not impossible. Just add money and a lot of time but I am sure I am not telling you anything you are not aware of already. I have not completed my first pcgs ms set
and I have been working on it for 4 years you must get pretty serious about your collecting GOOD LUCK. Will you post them when you get them? You caught my intrest...

In my experience it seems that gold coins appear in OGHs more than silver, nickel or copper and this might help with many of your purchases. Of course, depending upon the parameters of your type set, you may need a bit of luck to find all the issues.

Thanks. I am a pretty serious collector. image

I'll post pics when I get them...but that probably won't be until Baltimore in November.

OGH coins can indeed bring a hefty premium. I will need to be very selective and patient...but I'm used to that with my colonials.

The two coins I bought so far are both CAC'd too.

Agreed. I have been very satisfied with the CAC'ed gold coins I've purchased. With an OGH you can at least be sure the coin has not been messed with in the last 15 years.

Hopefully this one slabbed around 1989 should arrive Monday from Heritage.

Some folks say those coins in OGH's that might upgrade have already been tried. I don't know how people know such things. They must be very smart.

I bought this MS62 rattler not long ago. Perhaps it's a tad nicer than 62. But I plan to keep it in its old holder.

Bah! Some have, some haven't. People just like to declare something is fact, even - or especially - when they really have no idea. And people who resent paying more for OGH coins often use this flawed reasoning to defend their opinion that the coins are over priced.

How many times have you heard of dealers and collectors resubmitting coins over and over again until one day the grading gods smile on them and award a higher grade.

It's all subjective anyway...opinion...a certain amount of chance.

And none of that matters to me.

I like OGH gold because it hasn't been messed with in several years, because gold looks nice in those holders, because of the perception of a possible upgrade (useful if I decide to sell), and because it's a way to incorporate a certain amount of automatic selectivity into my collection.

    Nice Saint too! image

Three of my BEST OGH coin s came from the original slabbers....and had not been on the market since being "made". I think that may be a good tip....try to buy from the collector who made them, rather than from a dealer.
