Gonna corner the market on 1877's!

tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,240 ✭✭✭✭✭
I now own 3 of the 6 PCGS MS65 1877 trade dollars. I've seen one of the remaining 3 and don't consider it a gem. That leaves 2 to go! Maybe I should crack them all out so I have another 1/0? image

Your 77 CC looks nice! Quite a task getting 3 of 6 of top pop. Are you going
for more or just want a 66?

That is really cool...I have thought it would be really cool to do that same thing with other coins....sure is an expensive game to play. image

Technical question: if one of them goes to 65+ and is entered into the Registry - does the pop show as 6/0 still or as 1/0???
  • DonWillisDonWillis Posts: 961 ✭✭✭
    1/0 ......

edited to add: assuming that the 65+ goes into the collection.

It would be 5/1. Unless it was a crackout.

I've always thought that hoarding the top pieces was counterproductive for the hoarder. You might be able to hold someone hostage if they want one, but the more likely outcome is that you'll squelch interest from some would-be collectors who will feel like there is no point in trying to tackle a high end set in this series since all the best coins are locked up (much like TDN's own comments about the Pogue's having the best of certain early series locked up).

So you claim you have three of em but can only show pictures of one of them. I call BS...

    Prove me wrong with pics.

    TDN:

    You could use another approach.

I have a 1877-S 25c graded by PCGS as MS-58 in the old green label holder. Laura saw it. JA saw it too. Green stickered but that is besides the point.

Perhaps you can get one of your 1877 trade dollars graded AU-65 by PCGS? Then you would have a one of a kind and not have to worry about any encroachment by other 1877's?

I agree with that, and of course anyone is free to buy whatever they like in whatever quantity they choose. But the end result is the same.

These are the only duplicates I have in the trade dollars. Have often thought about trying to do a complete grading set for the series [ie: every grade known for every coin], but that doesn't appeal to me.

Where there is a wallet there is a way but I am not sure there are enough years left to complete that. I have always wanted to ask you why you haven't bothered with the different hub types for your CIR set? Why no 1876 cc DDR if you added the s/cc.

I like it when someone corners the market of MS 65s; it makes the 64s worth more.

In general, I don't care about varieties - not my cup of tea. The only reason I have the S/CC is because when I was growing up it was in the Redbook as part of the basic set.

I do own two 76-S DDO's however - just cuz they're darn rare.
  • Too bad you can't trade one in for 100 MS65 1877 Indian's.

You could crack then out and end up with all 64+'s...or maybe just a single MS65....and no 65+ image

I would send you a PM but I can't, Is there any way you would consider selling the lesser of your two 1876 s DDO to me? If not well done on getting them, I'll keep looking.

Never. Had 3 separate opportunities to acquire the coin and just don't like it.
  • tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,240 ✭✭✭✭✭
PCGS reviewed all the coins and declined to plus any of them. I'm someone surprised as I did feel one was better than the other two in surface quality, strike [hammered for an 1877] and good old fashioned originality. Add to that it was semi prooflike with pristine mirrors.

I believe the 78-S was bought out of an auction in 2005 or 2006 in the 80-90K range and sold within a year for about a marginally less than 50K profit. As it was a private treaty sale I'm taking the stance that the buyer and seller are entitled to their privacy.

Gorgeous color and a few minute ticks. Not a technical 68

Your idea of gorgeous color and mine are apparently different. I liked the luster, but in my eye the toning was rather bland. I agree that it was not a technical 68 and was rather surprised when it crossed.

    TDN,

Amend that to very pretty, The headlight nature of the lustre evidently blinded me. And your taste is surely your own. We all have our own standards for dreck. Some would even think that a coin less than unique in grade is a widget.image
