If an Australian wanted to sell me a US commemorative gold coin which they have in their possession in Australia and shipped it to me here in the states, would there be any import duty due? --Jerry

I have had coins come from other countries, Australia included, and never had to deal with any import duties. Since the coin in question is U.S., then most likely, no.

  • call it a gold medallion, don't use the word coin it confuses them. They think you're shipping pocket money.

    What he said.

I use Numismatic Collectible or Item as a description.

I've had quite a few coins shipped here form Australia and Europe and never had any import duties charged.

I live in California and have bought various coins from Australian sellers and never paid a duty.

You might ask the seller to mark the package something like "US made goods returned to the US".
