Tale of a Superbird quest and another bad ebay seller

1tommy1tommy Posts: 3,037 ✭✭✭✭✭
This story does have a happy ending thanks to Bowers and Merena, ok so i begin my quest looking for the superbird variety proof 1952 quarter, started with ebay, and to my surprise i found this coin and won the auction. now read the description and look at the coin.link Ok so i feel real good and wake up the next morning to find this on ebay. same seller . link So i send the seller a email asking why the same picture, she explains she made a mistake and she has 2 of these coins and that i would get the coin in the picture, for the 41 dollars, well just to make sure i bid and win the second coin for 51.00 . Ok so yesterday i get the first coin ITS NOT the coin. So i make sure the other one was already shipped and i email thru ebay the seller asking her why someone with such a high rating would send a coin that is not the one in the picture, also i told her that i bought the other one and was glad to see it shipped and was returning the first coin and if the second one wasn't the coin i would return it too. 2 emails and haven't heard a word, should get second coin tomorrow and will than proceed, meanwhile i kept searching and found this coin at Bowers and Merena. link ITS A SUPERSUPERBird unattributed lol thks to Ian and Bowers and Merena, sending this one in as part of my first 8 and hope that the coin joins the other top 12 in that grade. I am really excited my most expensive purchase and looking forward to getting the coin and sending it off. Will update this thread with the bad ebay seller id will wait till i get the second coin image edited finally figured how to do the links.

Congradulations looks like a nice coin. So what are the diagnostics of a "Superbird"?

I agree - these are still very easy to find in raw sets. I've set aside about 8 or 10. Don't pay a big premium unless you find a high grade or cameo example.

Since most of my cherrypicks were from sets in Capital plastic holders, I sometimes had more of a problem finding a single proof quarter to swap out and resell the set! So you might want to keep one of the non-Superbirds in case you find one in a set.

Well NotSure told me last weekend he thought both coins were not going to be the one in the picture, i held out hope even after the first coin was not, i got the other one today and yep its NOT the coin in the picture. Filed with ebay and amazing the sellers first email apologizing saying they would make it right, second email right after tells me there only going to pay for shipping once as i should have put both coins in one bag first class confirmation thats it. lol so i fired back an email letting her know i sent the first one back and it cost me 5.32 delievery signature and ins . I told her she could either pay for all the shipping back and i would not leave any comments or refund the 2.50 and i will leave both negatives. I am so happy that i got the one from Bowers and Merena they shipped it today. This is my first bad experience as a newbie on ebay and will continue the search...................

1tommy...I just KNEW it....something in my bones told me you were gonna get 'the bone' with that seller. There was just something that made me feel uneasy....to many repeat feedbacks, who by now don't question his (can't remember in our emails if you mentioned if it were a 'him' or 'her') word. Regardless.....too many red-flags...they weren't flagrant, but I felt there were subtle patterns that winners just said 'thanks'. Then, using the same image.....which just so happens to be a non-attributed Superbird.....he/she knew what was going on with the first 'win'. Scammer, scammer, scammer.....all but pointing to a 'rip', get the bids up, and don't deliver. I just felt it sooo deeply, and I told you just that, Tom! I really wished I were wrong....but I love that one from Bowers & Merena!!! Let's not forget the 'final numbers' were a little bit in your favor, as I recall.....so, I think you did well...thats going to look great in a properly attributed holder!!! A keeper for sure!

As for the seller of the 2 bogus ones, that were described as 'the actual coin you'll receive'...I'd out the seller, and leave very appropriate feedback.

But, Paypal is the buyers friend, so at the very worst, if seller refuses to refund your $$ (which I think could be an issue...I was right about both not being a Superbird, when the images clearly showed one....twice)....at worst, file a SNAD, and you'll get your money. Take images/screenshot/copy the auction before seller pulls it, or the image at least.

BUT, I do like that CAM, Tom!
    I'll come up with something.
  • Was there anything interesting about the non-superbird coins.
There are serveral class III reverse doubled dies in the 1952. Some are not too obvious. One of them has a U shaped or "?" shaped die crack on the eagle. I like to call that one Under Bird, but I don't know anybody else that does.

Well this is the response from the seller, and it leaves me wondering if i should just eat the return postage and leave negatives as this girl just doesn't get it. (I'm usually very good at reading people, but I'm having a tough time with you. Please allow me to be frank and take no offense, because none is intended. You aren't one of those people who will leave negative no matter what I do, are you? Sorry sounds harsh, but again no offense. If you are not, then that sounds fine with me. I will reimb the $5 and change from yesterday and the 1st class Plus delivery confirmation for the 2nd one. I'll need an email address to send a seperate paypal payment--let me know the total please. If you're going to leave Negative anway, I'd like the satisfaction of telling you Too Bad! Sorry, that last line was a poor attempt at humor. Thanks Tom-hope I didn't offend) I think the last line of Too Bad is what really ticks me off, should i just take the money or is it better to lose my postage and leave the feedback she deserves?

That is feedback extortion. I think you just let the seller off the hook. --Jerry

pcgs read me july 2010 I would have to say yes since this article is this year, and i did call and asked them and no didnt notice anything on the other two wrong coins, and yes as a newbie i did learn that next time i will not worry about the return postage, and leave the feedback. If they wipe off my comments because of that than so be it and i learned. Watch out for this dealer Mel-ko
