Whew... what a long title...
Well, I made it to Boston from SW FLA on Tuesday.
Leaving the heat and humidy behind - or - so I thought.
It was just as muggy as I had left Florida here in Boston.
I arrived early, Friday for the lot viewing at the Park Plaza hotel for the
Bowers and Merena auction [ being held today, Saturday ]. I was
met by Debbie MacDonald whose acquaintance I have had since
the early days while QDB was president of B&M. It was great meeting
her in person. We chatted until the safe was opened [ an hour early
because I was there - Thanks Debbie !! ]
As I was only interested in one lot - I made my decision "to go to the Mat"
on the coin - as I feel it was undergraded and it is a perfect upgrade for
my collection. Bidding on line, I have a nice cushion in my bid
- and am top bidder - at least for the moment. {Edit: I was outbid - sorry to say }

After viewing the B&M material, I walked across the hall to the Stack's
auction viewing room... again...I was an hour early for them as well.
I had a pleasant chat with their employee, Gino, who used to live in
Naples, FL, where I live. [ Small world ]. Again, I was only interested
in seeing their Barber halves - so my visit was short.
My first show of the day [ again, early] was the Arizona Expo & JJ Teaparty "Castle" show.
It was not overly crowded due to the early hour and I like it that way. I went to
see the gals at JJ Teaparty [ Gail was holding a newp for me - a 1907-O Half
in PCGS 53 with the most unusual reverse mint made gouges under the wings.]
{ Todd will be imaging that coin as soon as possible. }
I made my way around the floor - and stopped by Rick Snow's to say hello
and congratulations; while there I spotted an 1885 V Nickel he had in PCGS 62
which I promptly had sent to fellow collector, JMW. { Hope you like it Joe}.
Also maintaining want lists from other collectors as well, I ran across a stunning
1906-O Dime with knock-your-socks-off reverse rim toning; my friend had asked me to
locate an AU 58 for him - but this ANACS MS 61 was just too nice. I called my friend
and he was afraid it wouldn't cross. [ I even got the dealer to reduce the price to
12% lower than his ask. ] Still, my friend was afraid it wouldn't cross at PCGS. His loss.
I stumbled across an SLQ which I have been searching for - a 1921 in PCGS MS 64 FH.
This is a WOW coin. Todd will be imaging this coin as well.
Not alot of Barber upgrades at that show for me - so I walked down to the Radisson Hotel
and went to the Bay State Show. The Bay State show was held on the 6th floor - and was
very disjointed; all the dealers were broken up into a series of rooms - ranging from large
to tiny to small to large.
I met a dealer, Mike Gomes, who had a nice 1917-P SLQ Ty 2 - PCGS 64 FH - which I also was
searching for - he shot me a very good price - and as its my Father's birth year coin - it was an
easy decision. [ It was also $200 less than what another dealer had quoted me at the previous
show at the "Castle" for same grade & service - and as it turned out my newp has a superior FH ].
Also at the Bay State Show, I stumbled into another tiny room, which had three dealers in it. One of
which, was Certified Assets Management - and I spotted another perfect upgrade for my Half Dollar
collection - which is an EX: FRIEND pedigree. The owner, Bob Higgins, is holding the coin for me
which I'll be able to get at the ANA.
Over all - a very nice day - and the temp's dropped down to the mid 80's and the dew-point
numbers dropped to the high 40's - so its dry and beautiful here. The long range forecast for
next week... the humidity is coming back... sorry .

You certainly covered alot of ground in a short time... I am amazed that I just read a very full report and it is only a little after 8am... what did you do? Get up at dawn and start harrassing these folks at 6am? Even then, you covered alot of ground... My goodness... I just woke up and am on my first cup of coffee...

I got to Boston yesterday morning at 7:30 AM -
and had breakfast at Au Bon Pain at the Park Plaza.
Then I waited until 8:30 AM to harass Bowers and Merena.
I just finished my first cup of coffee myself this morning
and am off to Andover soon to pick up my cousin's son
from Summer Camp. He's going to tag along with me on
Monday at the PNG Day at the ANA. He's never been to
a large coin show - and he's a budding collector.

I was there so early - I couldn't give you a fair assessment of the Castle show;
but by late morning the Bay State Show was fairly busy. I just hated the layout.

I'm pretty sure the 1906-O dime was my coin. I had a table right next to JJ Teaparty.

I'm at Glenn Holsonbake's table. I'm not too sure if I'll have a chance to
continue to browse for things for my friends. Dimeman should have trusted
my judgment on the 06-O; if I hadn't already made a 1906-O out of my Dansco
in a PCGS 58 - I would have snagged that ANACS coin in a heart beat !
The ANA show opened at 1:00 yesterday - and there was light to moderate traffic
on the smaller side of the convention. Our table is very close to The Ship of Gold
and the Smithsonian National Collection exibit. [ I had never seen a 1921 St. Gauden's
Double Eagle in SP before. Absolutely stunning. Of course, the other gold coins were
nothing to sneeze at either. [ I forgot that the 1849 was a Proof Like striking ! ]
