I was hoping that when the grader saw the whole set laid out in front of him, that he would have seen the progression of toning and realized that all were NT - not AT. Be that as it may - I think they were a bit strict - and may have downgraded the coins for being questionably toned.
Here are the last of the raw coins now in PCGS holders:
1915-P - No Grade @ PCGS - AU Details Grade @ NGC Purchased from Dave Lawrence - raw - in 1995 - as an AU 55 Please refer to the large image of page two.
Well, Folks, that sums up the raw Dime submission - and the Dimes already certified. All images are from Todd Pollock's company " BluCCphotos" in Sacramento, California.
As I mentioned, I've amended the previous posts showing a side by side comparison of each date.
Thanks again for all the kind words - I appreciate it.
The last post will show the neat - at least I think so - 1916-S Dime that I picked up while at the FUN 2010 Show - it was in an ANACS 45 holder - but - I wanted everything in the same holder, and it crossed into a PCGS 45 holder in February, 2010.
EDIT: 8/26/2010.
Just added the NGC images. Todd Pollock will still be imaging the NGC coins once I receive them back. I'll repost once Todd has a chance to image them.

I amended the title of this Thread to show that the raw coins that were certified have comparable pieces which were purchased by me as already certified - not so as to contradict the recent grades given my raw coins but to show a side by side date comparison.
In my last edit - I mentioned that I was going to post an unusual 1916-S Barber Dime: PCGS XF 45 : Stuck Thru at 1:00 on OBV
Well, I hope you all enjoyed the images - if so - tell Todd - if not tell me...

Very cool to see the grades side by side. I did notice that there are some pretty impressive dealers that do not know how to grade according to PCGS. The Aurora Coin coins stand out to me. If its the same Aurora I buy from I cannot see why so many "No Grades" came into play. He, for the most part, only sells original coins that have not been goofed with. My raw Merc set has a few coins that were purchased from him.
I thought it would be helpful to see similar grades shown next to each other.
Re: Aurora coins - I bought Barber Dimes from them in raw state back in the mid 1990's. I have not bought from them since. As "grading is subjective", I will wait for the non graded coins to return before I can actually agree with the graders determination.
I had Glenn Holsonbake preview the coins before they were submitted - and Glenn wrote descriptions on each coin - and his grade or "no grade" for cleaning or if there was a minor problem as to why the coin wouldn't holder.
I think its important to note that I was a very casual collector 15 years ago and this was my first real attempt in assembling a choice raw set - not just pulling coins out of circulation as I did in the early 1960's in high school.
Once these coins return from the photographer, I'll study each and every one with a Kevin Flynn book at my side - to check for die-varieties. There seem to be quite a few in this series - and my meager Varieties set is riddled with holes.
Glad you enjoyed the images.

Obviously an incredible amount of effort went into putting that collection together. Excellent work.
I realize this may be impossible to answer, but knowing you live in the hot humid southeast, was there much toning that took place once the dimes went into the album?
<< <i>Obviously an incredible amount of effort went into putting that collection together. Excellent work.
I realize this may be impossible to answer, but knowing you live in the hot humid southeast, was there much toning that took place once the dimes went into the album?
So.. what's next? >>
We live in climate controlled environments - my bank and my home are kept at a constant temperature. Unlike where I lived in the Boston area, where hardly anyone used their air conditioning - and the humidity was a nuisance but you lived with it a few weeks during the Summer.
The Dansco album provided ample toning - and the coins got to a point that I was afraid to leave them in the album any longer. I didn't want solid purple coins - just nice rim toned ones. Basically I got the toning effects I was after without the use of chemical accelerators.
What's next ? ..... I'm having my raw set of Liberty Head Nickels sent in for grading - its a decent set pulled out of circulation by my Grandfather way back when. The 12-D & 12-S were two I added to complete the set...I already added and had graded the two other toughies... the 1885 and 1886 - both in PCGS 58's.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I just added five NGC images of the Dimes that didn't muster at PCGS.
Two of the five came back with AU Details - Cleaned. Sorry to say.
Check out the 1893-S; 1896-S; 1897-O; 1898-P; 1898-S. The images NGC provided are nothing more than scans, but I guess they're better than nothing.
I plan on having Todd of BluCCphotos reimage these coins at the ANA in Boston next week.
The balance of the submission to NGC was an Economy Submission and the grades are not back as of yet. [ I just submitted these coins while I was at FUN earlier in the month.]
I'll continue to post images as I get them.

1893/2 PCGS AU 58 Purchased from American Numismatic Rarities - ANACS 58 - in 2005
My newest Overdate:

EDIT: NEW IMAGES : 1893/2 PCGS AU 58 Secure Plus - CAC

Added the newer image of the overdate - Secure Plus - CAC
EDIT - Scans from recent NGC submission have been received - and as I mentioned before - they are poor quality - and I'll send the coins to Todd for imaging.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
As the three 1898's didn't holder at PCGS - I went on a quest to get three that were pre-holdered:
The following Phila, New Orleans and San Francisco Dimes are going to be a Christmas present for my 1st Cousin's 12 yr old son, Marco - who was with me at the beginning of the Boston ANA. I have him hooked on coins... wonder how that happened ? He selected Barber Dimes as his first choice in circulated coins but loves IHC in MS [ kid's got great taste ].
Plus - I didn't want this Thread to get buried - it took too much effort to post everything.
Enjoy the images !!

What was the first Dime I purchased for my raw set which eventually was certified by PCGS ? .....................................{ Date & Mint Mark ( if any ) }.......................................................
One hint - its a PCGS coin - Second hint - I no longer own it - as its in JMW's Barber Dime Collection.

I did have an 1896-O [ ex: NGC 58 ] that crossed to PCGS as an AU 55 but sold it to pay for the 1896-O in PCGS 58 that I purchased from Casey, back in 2009.
I believe JMW is still looking for an example.

Beautiful set you got going there. I also collect Barber Dimes but not anywhere near as nice as the ones you have. I'm more of a XF for easy dates and F for harder dates kind of guy.
The first raw coin purchased for the Dansco album was 1894 {Philly }
and although it was not stated as a Philadelphia coin - its well known that by not placing a mint mark designation after the date means only one thing... its a P-Mint Coin !!
John...blue594... Congratulations !!
