Who was the first sport's signature you got in person?

Mines was Larry Bird when I was a lot younger(I think high school). He came to the mall to do a signing.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Another thread about a topic that has been discussed within the past 6 months.

Don't any of you ever use the search function before you start spewing out like you're the first to ever think of something?
  • Update: I originally posted the question about...... who people plan to pass their cards down to if their family doesn't want it or will they sell it?......to...... who's their first in person sport's signature?

If anyone can search and find the topic about my original question, post the link, because I can't find it.
    Thanks for your help everyone.

Interesting that you change the title and the content.

    You are an absolute loser!
  • Otwcards,

I changed it because you said it was brought up. However, I did a search and I couldn't find it.
    Thanks for your help everyone.
  • Great thread!

It was Steve Trout from the visiting bullpen at Three Rivers Stadium. I just wish more people would sub his cards and put the 10s for sale.

    Try the search function.

Or just go back to posting partial scans.

Maybe you should look up a dictionary, too. "Mines" is not the correct usage of the possessive for personal ownership or a pluralization of "mine is."
  • otwcardsotwcards Posts: 5,291 ✭✭✭
Did you complain to Trout because he wasn't Ron Santo or Willie Stargell?
  • otwcards, I mentioned before that I would post full pics if I ever decide to post in the future.
    Thanks for your help everyone.

If you had read the initial post title and content and read what the OP typically writes and does, you might actually have a clue.

Your nomination is so noted and coming from you, I take that as the word of an expert!

If they were new and not recycled byproducts that have been here and punted, then maybe I'd have some compassion! But the stupidity level is not something that is so easily repeated. The continual retreads that come back and wreak havoc and clutter the boards with their inane recycled posts and games is just too much.

Angry tonight? Not at all. Just tired of the same trite crap and typical attempts to cover their tracks. The EDIT button should be eliminated. Right Mr. Navarro? image

Billy Gardner's auto on a couple of the 1962 Topps cards he's on. I waited after a Denver Bear's game at Mile High Stadium when he was managing the Montreal Expo's AAA team back in the late '70s. I also got to meet his daughter Shelly during a game. She was very friendly!

The first autograph that I remember getting was in elementary school. It was Billy Lothridge, who played football for a few years. His daughter was one of my friends and he came out to the playground to play with us one day. I didn't know who he was other than "Lori's dad", but she told me used to be a pro player so I got his graph. Little did I know at that time that it would become a lifelong hobby so far. I still see Lori all the time, one of these days I need to thank her for introducing me to graphs.

The right fielder for the Salisbury, NC team in the old South Atlantic League, the SALLY league. His name was Danny Coker. A friend and I gave this guy a hard time all year every time Salisbury came to play the Gastonia Pirates. Their last trip through Gastonia that year (1960 or 61) we asked for his autograph and he actually gave it to us. Very nice of him.

  • My first in person auto was Fernando Valenzuela back in 1986. He came to my elementary school to talk to us kids. Well I did not understand him but 99% of the students did. Luckily for me, my sister, and the Smith brothers, there was an interpreter. He was really cool. And growing up in LA during those times--Fernando was like the President or Bill Cosby. He was a VERY big deal.Good times.

Lawrence McCutcheon (RB for the LA Rams), 1977 I think. I lived in SoCal and he was doing a signing at a clothing store near Ventura.

Ken Griffey, Jr. after a Mariners game when I was a kid. Can't remember what year it was, but I remember my Uncle, who lives in Seattle, walking me down to wear the team was coming out. He walked out and signed my baseball. I had no idea at the time who the guy was, but super happy I kept that ball.

I don't remember the exact player, but he was a member of the 1971 San Diego Padres. The first autographs I ever got were on game programs of the Padres from 1971-1973. Then in 1974, I started getting baseball cards signed. I also got "team" baseballs signed in 1974, 1975 and 1976. Then I went back to baseball cards only in 1977, 1978 and 1979. The only baseball cards I would not get signed were 1971, 1975, 1977, 1980 and 1982 Topps, since they had the facsimile autographs on them, and I've always felt they look bad with two signatures on them.

Back in the 80s, on a day when me and my friends cut a period or two in school, we got Huey Lewis (of Huey Lewis and the News) autograph when we saw them in San Francisco's Chinatown on Ross Alley filming one of their music videos!

First athlete was Bobby Orr 75, he was passing through my home town on a fishing trip. So he stopped at the school and signed autos for all the kids.

First ever auto was Stompin Tom Connors, The Hockey Song guy. Stood in line after he did a concert in 72. image

Actually a funny story. When I was young my father took me to one of the "QB Legends" gatherings at the Opry Hotel here in Nashville. I don't remember the first signature I got but I threw up on John Brodie right after I took my picture with him. I still have the ball he signed.

Staying at a Ramada Inn somewhere between MA and DC in the early 70s, The New York Knicks were staying there too. Got a bunch of them on a piece of paper but have no idea who or where that piece of paper ended up.

First one I remember was my mom taking me to meet Butch Hobson at a signing at a local bank in 1976

Mine was Rex Barney, former Brooklyn Dodger and Orioles PA Announcer. My only other in-person autograph was Boog Powell at Boog's BBQ at Oriole Park. I'm planning on getting Cal Ripken Jr.'s autograph at the National next month... needless to say I'm a bit nervous.

Brooks Robinson..Summer of 1974..with my mom back to school shopping for clothes and he was signing free autographs at a store in Baltimore. Totally random. Had no idea he was going to be there.
I still have it! This summer I am taking my son to meet Brooks at The National Show! Going to have to pay this time around.

  • Kevin Duckworth. I was about 9 getting a ride home from little league. I saw him standing on the corner. I grabbed my step-dad's business card as it was the only paper I could see and got it autographed. He was standing on the curb, I was on the street, so that added about 4" to his already massive stature....he was a giant!

From the mid 70's I was at some gathering where players from all 4 Boston teams were supposed to come by and interact.

I was probably 9 at the time and along with my folks came a friend from school who wanted to meet Sam "Bam" Cunningham.

We must have been there for 90 minutes before Terry O'Reilly showed up 1st. He made time to go to each table and shake people's hands. He also stopped and sat at tables with kids.

He got to out table and signed a team issued photo and chatted when my friend asked who he was. Terry introduced himself and then told my friend James about playing hockey.

Terry was great. He was the only one who showed before we left.

Phillies prospect Rickey Jordan at a card show in 1989. I got 2 cards (89 Fleer and UD) and a ball auto'ed. He auto'ed the ball with a blue Sharpie. The auto faded/bled into a blue haze over the years.

Not to be a jerk and this is a serious question. Did you have to hold the card for Abbot while he signed. or was he at a table?
