first box, good centering. 16 cards that have shots at a 10 including 1 pop 0 and Brett Butler pop 1. Sandberg is probably an 8. Didn't get a Boggs or a Gwynn.

Nice pickup! Was that his only case? Good luck!

2nd box, about the same number of potential 10's. Probably more than the number I've selected but I'm super tough when grading. Got a potential 10 Rice, Ryan Super Vet, and Molitor. Got a NM/MT Boggs and a Gwynn that is perfectly centered and has a mangled corner image

gonna rip these "Hot Packs" I bought off of ebay with some of my ebay bucks before I rip any more boxes of '83's. Anyone ever opened any of these?

Been almost an hour. Let's see what you've got. And I'm not talking about the rash caused by the itch! image

Good luck - I've opened around 5 vending boxes - I've had some centering problems and - of course - corner problems.

I had trouble pulling a decent Gwynn - all were OC - and didn't get a center Boggs either!

    My best pull:

I wouldn't mind trying to put together a really nice set from a case - I imagine some cards may be tough tho.

well, I must say for $60 or so in free ebay bucks this was pretty damn fun. Knowing you are gonna get a hit in each pack is pretty cool.

lol, It's like Christmas and santa left some early 80's Topps cards.

Box 3, 1 Boggs probably an 8. Nothing else special. Another Molitor with a shot at a 10.

Box 4, 1 Sandberg, solid 8 with shot at a 9 and 2 off center Boggs. 19 potential 10's including Seaver super vet, #613 pop 0, Schmidt super vet, Jenkins super vet, #559 pop 0, and Carlton SO Leaders. Best box so far.

There are only 24 cards in the set that are pop 0's so a few of them might ring a bell with the set registry folks.

just pulled a dead centered Sandberg out of box 5 along with about 10 other cards that have GEM potential including 2 more pop 0's. I'm about a third of the way through this box. I'll put up some scans after this box.

    Scans? Thanx

That is great! I saw the scan of the prior Ryne Sandberg card and that was a nice looking mint card. If you have good centering on this set you are two thirds of the way there. I had forgotten how nice these cards were. I bet you are having a great time with this and hopefully you get some very high end key cards. Good luck!
  • About half the set is a pop 0. However, there is some douche on eBay that is currently paying $50 per PSA 10 for commons.

There are only 24 Pop 0's left and 56 Pop 1's.
  • corvette1340corvette1340 Posts: 3,384 ✭✭✭
The last 2 scans are Pop 0 cards which is pretty lucky out of 6 boxes considering there are only 24 of them left. The Earl Weaver is a Pop 1 but one of the coolest cards I've seen because he looks like he's been on a 2 week bender.

I should go through some of my boxes in search of low pop cards from this era. I literally have about between 14 - 20 5,000 count boxes of cards from 1981 to 1986. I would just open boxes at a time and put a set together and sell off some rookies and stars and just put the rest in those monster 5000 count boxes. Maybe I can get a weekend and just have some fun........going through those boxes that is.image

out of 5 and a half boxes I've only pulled 1 Tony, but I've pulled 6 Boggs', and 4 Sandbergs. Hopefull Tony is chillin' in the remaining boxes.
  • corvette1340corvette1340 Posts: 3,384 ✭✭✭
first half of case opened. Here are the stats:

3 Gwynns - 1 possible 9, 1 dead centered with perfect corners and has a small stain at the top (this sucked), 2 of these were in the same box
    5 Sandbergs - 1 possible 10, 2 possible 9's
9 Boggs' - 1 possible 9, majority of these off center
    6 Ripkens - 1 possible 10
    7 Ryans - 1 possible 10

30 other star cards that have shots at 10's
25 cards of either pop 0 or pop 1 cards that have shots at 10's
91 other cards that have shots at 10's

Have you ever opened any rack boxes of 83 topps? I was curious if the chances of pulling gem 10s is better out of the 83 racks or vending?

I've busted a ton of 83 Topps and best results were from racks.

I've opened about 20 vending boxes , many rack packs , and even a rack box.

I have received gem type cards from all the various ways, with that said rack probably

    yields the best chance.

    Good for you.

Those stats mirror my experience of Gwynn being a tough pull - plus, as I said, centering is a major issue.

You have to weight the cost and amount of cards in the equation too to determine the best value of rack vs. vending.

A 6 box rack case is listed at $1350 so probably sell it for a little above $1200 vs. 24 Vending boxes at $1000.

That's 6480 cards you are getting to look at in a rack case vs. 12000 in a vending case.

I'm getting potential 10's at a rate of 12-13 per box on first run through, so I'll probably throw a few of those out and probably gain a few more on second inspections so that's probably close to the true rate.

I'm not sure which is the best value but you'd have to get potential 10's at a 2-1 rate in rack vs. vending and still pay a little more than 20% more in cost. I may buy a case of rack just to see now that I'm curious.
  • Grocery rack case that Steve has is about the same price and you get an extra 2160 cards.
  • RookieWaxRookieWax Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭
if that grocery rack case is the kind with the 3 individually wrapped 12 card packs inside, you wouldn't want it. Those packs are wrapped so tightly, the cards come out with terrible corners and even bent at times.

I would also be interested in a set, or even a set minus the 3 RCs.

I'm not interested in Bill's set, 'cause he's a tule.

If I put some sets together I'll let you guys know. I'll do it eventually, just not sure when I'll get the time. I've got 4 boxes left to open and then I'll give the final stats.

Finally opened all 24 boxes. Here are the final stats:

    9 Gwynn's - subbing 2 of them, neither have shots at 10
    11 Sandberg's - subbing 5 of them, 1 has a shot at a 10
14 Boggs - subbing the nicest one of these and it may 9. Centering was horrible on most of these
    11 Ripken's - subbing 3 and they all have shots at 10
    10 Ryan's - subbing 1, has a shot at 10

35 pop. 0's or pop. 1's that have shots at 10
42 other star cards that have shots at 10
168 other cards that have shots at 10.

I'll look at the pop report as well as the lists others have sent me that they need and decide which of these to sub.

10.7 average per box that have shots at 10. I'm sure I missed a few and chose a few that don't have a chance at 10 but oh well. Overall I had a blast and it's been a fun few days of ripping. I would recomend it. A+
