  • Yes, I do own the 1939/40 1RM Probe, bought it last year, it was my dream coin at the time, an overlap between my 3rd reich and my German 1 Mark collection. I just realised I got that 1/2 Mark coin from you Dan, that was also a wonderful addition.

Kidding? Why kidding? Take a look at Uruguay's soccer lineage. Holland's soccer lineage is this: Best Runner ups of all time.
    Uruguay 2 Who?lland 0
  • AndresAndres Posts: 977 ✭✭✭
Yes, Holland is the best runner up of all times, thats why they will play the final,
not shure if they win the final , thats why I said probably.
Uruguay just nearly made it, against Ghana with tons of luck,
Holland will kick them out on Tuesday next, sorry.

My prediction: Germany 3, Uruguay 1.

Spain and the Netherlands are perpetual runners-up and will remain so.
  • wybritwybrit Posts: 6,988 ✭✭✭
My predictions (which means you should bet on the other teams):

    Semi Finals:
Netherlands 2 Uruguay 1 in OT. The Dutch in-fighting could do them in. Van Persie is a real problem (of course, he plays for Arsenal, what do you expect?)
Germany 2 Spain 1. Spain isn't Argentina or England - Germany will find this a tough one.

    Thrid Place:
    Spain 2 Uruguay 0

    Final:
Germany 3 Netherlands 2. Almost a repeat of the 1974 final.

Uruguay has had many successes since. in 1980 we won the 50th anniversary fifa champioship of champions. Only former WC champions were allowed to play in this.
We have won Copa America tournaments, equivelant to the Euro Cup which holland gets so much credit for winning because European soccer is so better marketed
you probably never heard of Copa America, its the biggest tournament other than the WC, bigger than the euro in attendance. Uruguay has won 15 of these, tied for most with Argentina, brasil only has 6.
Uruguay thrive as underdogs. We beat Brasil in Brasil in 1950 as huge underdogs. Brasil had the newspapers already printed saying they were champions.
People committed suicide at the Maracana stadium when Brasil lost, that's how important that championship was(Very sad)
There's a saying that goes "Only 3 people have ever silenced the Maracana stadium with one swift movement, The Pope, Frank Sinatra, and Ghigia"(the 2nd goal socrer to win the cup).
Yes that was a long time ago, but this tiny country of 3.4 million people has put out as many top flight soccer players over the years as any country with 100 million.
Diego Forlan 2 time top goal scorer in all of europe. Both times were in the past 4 years so this wasnt 40 years ago.

Luis Suarez now infamous for his handball will cover up the fact that he has been top scorer in the Dutch leage for 2 years and is now rumored to Man U. Its a shame his handball
will be rememebred by people who dont know soccer. People who dont know every player in the world would do the same thing. People who dont know that every team practices that
same exact scenario in practice. Its called "The last man standing" scenario and every player is told to use hands if they have to. This is less cheating than any handball to score a goal like Maradona's where only reward is given. Suarez was penalized. Ghana missed a penalty kick. There is no cheating. Cheating was the 3 uncalled penalties in that same game for Uruguay by the very harsh aggressive ghana players. Cheating is the fake dive by the ghana player to set up that free kick with the handball.
Ironically in Italy 90, Uruguay was kept out of the next round by a Spain handball of a goal headed to net. The difference? The refs didnt call it and Spain tied Uruguay at 0-0.
Uruguay's problem has been beating smaller teams. We have always relished the underdog role and always play the best teams tight. We played spain to that 0-0 tie, nearly winning with the blown no call, only to lose to Bulgaria in the same group. This heavily favored Netherlands team is exactly who we wake up for. Its unfortunate Suarez wont get to play agasint the country whom he knows so well as the top scorer there but Forlan will step up and score a brace.

van Persie and Huntelaar are competing for the worst player in this championship.
trainer van Marwijk should send them home, before they can cause any real damage.

    @mumu,

results from the past are no garantee for the future,
I agree Uruguay has a fine palmares, but the present team can't beat the dutch at this moment in time.
    just my opinion,
but who knows, perhaps van Persie and Huntelaar are playing both on tuesday image ,and perhaps the referee hates the dutch,
and Uruguay will play exceptional well ....

it took the dutch 80 years to get rid of the spanish between 1568 -1648, and it ruined Spain.
it now will take only 90 minutes , my prediction Netherlands 4 Spain (Barcelona) 2
a bit late for the rest of the world, to realize the Dutch have the best team ever , in present 2010
    just my 2cents

and mumu, I hope, pray & believe Uruguay will beat the Germans with 3-1

So much for my predictions - only picked one semi right - the easier one, so, no prediction for the final. The Dutch will have a tough time with the Spanish passing game, much like the Germans did. It will be a very even matchup nonetheless. I hope it's not a 1-0 affair like the Spain-Germany game.

Two weeks ago I met with an old friend who enjoys gambling on some specific sports. We were going to spend the 5 following days in the same place, without a tv, but with a limited nightly use of a laptop and a mobile GPS stick. The morning after England's last game, I realized that he had placed a winning bet on Germany, that was IMHO very generous considering the form of the two teams, but that wasn't his big bet. He soon told me that he had placed 1000 euros on Holland to win the World Cup, before its start, and with a coefficient of 14:1 if he was right.

I have no reason but to wish him the success that he probably deserves ,if only because his time for a big win is due, although this is a risky statement with gamblers. But then again, Holland too is due for a major win of their national side since the early 70s and Ajax's threepeat. All this hard work, these academies in 5 continents, it all pays off in one such final.

I don't believe that the octopus is an entirely honest fabrication. What is he, a psychic reader? What if he was wrong 30-40% of the times, would they still be showing it on tv? And how could they be certain from the start of the tournament that it would continue to pick the right teams? I mean, would they have simply abandoned it if it was wrong? I just saw it on BBC hugging Spain's bowl -with the better food inside, I'll bet on that! image -, but my heart is with Holland.

Oh, well. My original winner was Brazil, but that was done in by the worst officiating I'd ever seen in an international match and a juvenile reaction by the selecao.

Maybe FIFA will find refs who understand how to call offsides in time for the 2014 cup.

Germany 100%. Being Australian I obviously support them (Australia) but found myself baracking against them in the Germany v Australia game in the group stage.

I'm going for Netherlands in the final because they are closer and more like Germany.

I'm really torn over this final as I work with people living in both countries.

In my heart though I would like to see the Dutch win this one.

What a terrible referee for a final of this magnitude. Not that the Spanish goal was anything less than spectacular, but the entire phase started by a wrong call, a Dutch foul that was deflected by a Spanish defender to the right of the Spanish goalpost, but instead of a corner the referee said the ball was out. That started the exchange that some seconds later ended with the ball in the Dutch net.

    Anyway, congrats to Spain.

    Referee 1 Netherlands 0

Absolutely terrible calls. People wonder why players flop so much? Now you know, if you get fouled in the 18 yard box and don't fall down, the ref won't call it. The rules I always played football by is if the ball goes off an opponents arm on a free kick, you get the ball.

Oh well, I guess FIFA will come out now and apolgize to the Dutch.
