In looking at the sellers feedback, most of his auctions look to be for items under $10...Is this seller likely freaking out over realizing over $100k on this or what?...looks like he is a small time seller/collector who hit the big one on this provided the bidders are legit.
The card is over $125K now. I would guess this will sell for $150k or more. Assuming this deal actually goes through, this has to put this card in the Top 10 in the highest amount paid for a card. The Honus Wagner went for $2.8M, the 1914 Babe Ruth was $400k+. Is there a list of cards somewhere that have sold for this kind of money?
This auction is like a car wreck - you can't take your eyes off it and you just shake you head on how it could have ever happened!
I agree, though, that this is great publicity for the hobby.
WANTLIST 1992 Topps FB Golds (72% complete) 1997 Topps FB Minted in Canton (10% complete) 1999 Topps FB Record Numbers Gold (80% complete) 2001 Topps FB MVP Promotion (35% complete)
I can't imagine who would pay this much for a card of this nature. I saw the Super Refractor was graded a BGS 9.5, very shady on Beckett's part. I am guessing the buyer is either someone close to Strasburg, the owner of the Nationals, a company looking for publicity, or just a collector with a ton of money who wants the bragging rights to a one of a kind card. I am scratching my head. I have collected since 1985 and there has never been anything like this happen.

Tell me how its "great" publicity for the hobby? >>
It shows the average joe that a $5.00 pack of baseball cards could make you rich. We have already seen sold out boxes at Walmarts across the country and record prices for modern cards. The more people who buy cards the more money that is circulated into the hobby meaning everyone wins. (Except the poor schmucks with boxes of worthless cards in 15 years) We are starting to see the same surge that occurred in the 80's. Nothing but good.
The current bidder, at $262,300, has (0) feedback; seller says he won't sell to anyone with less than 10 feedback. Would he turn down over a quarter of a million dollars, assuming the bid is legitimate?

Somewhere, the management team from a live auction house are all rolling on the floor laughing at whats going on with this card.
<< <i>This can't be real. I mean.... Seriously? >>
Ok, 900k, it's a joke. >>
Judging by the 3 current top bidders (2**N, t**d,and 8**i) , this appears to be real money. After this card crossed the $100k mark, I commented that people now view this card as more than a card. Its now viewed as art or as an icon of some sort.

Possibly, but why would serious bidders be bidding right now, with 4 days left? All they are all doing is driving the price up. Just is a little fishy to me. I know they have a lot of feed back, but shesh.
definitely a joke shill scenario because the guy with 237 feedback made 20 bids in small increments up to $999,000 and then stopped when he was tied with the other guy, then mysteriously a new 24 feedback bidder bids.
I got an email from a buddy of mine (who's really not even a serious collector) a few minutes ago asking if I'd heard of the Strasburg card on Ebay. Word is spreading quickly about this auction. With the price action over the last 90 minutes, I wouldn't be surprised if its on national news tomorrow.
<< <i>Something is up 5 bidders just dropped off and the bid dropped a touch >>
LOL. Yeah, I noticed that. One guy who was 3 deep all of a sudden just became the high bidder. Maybe the fear factor of actually being the high bid will flush out some of the BS bidders.
107 bidders and the price back up, I recently over paid for a card on EBAY and thought I got ripped off. After this I am not feeling so bad. This is the worst investment in history at this price bar none.
I am a financial advisor and deal with high net worth clients, I did not know there was this many people in the market for a brand new baseball card for a million bucks. Take that money and go buy 5% tax free bonds or something. This is a publicity stunt for sure at this price.

I'm sure that tax free bond will make your client the talk of the office. Everyone will want to know him and be seen with him because of that interesting, unique tax free bond.

The 80s surge lead directly to the 90s flood. Good for the seller, not for the collector.
Well, maybe it'll draw attention away from vintage, and I'll scoop up some bargains!

t***d, with 442+ feedback, just retracted their $999,999.99 bid.
But we've got a 1,900+ fb bidder, and a 1,700+ fb bidder battling it out at $950K+
Steve
If not....damn, I should have bought it at 50K BIN and listed it!!!!

I'm sure lots of people are doing that right now. This auction will be legend for quite some time. Its tempting to be able to say "I bid on it"
