Thanks for the Gift Advice - Best CC-mint Dollar for under $2K??? Coin finally chosen! (and $3K spen

renomedphysrenomedphys Posts: 3,861 ✭✭✭✭✭
A co-worker and friend of mine is looking for a graduation present for her son. She would like to buy him a CC-mint silver dollar that is essentially nice and problem-free. I know that there are a few CC-Trade Dollars that $2K will buy you in AU, but I thought I would get some forum advice. Any suggestions?

Is she looking for rare or flashy? If not flashy, I'd try to find a nice F/VF 70-CC Seated Dollar...that's a cool coin IMHO!

How about a clean cheek 1885 CC in PCGS MS64DMPL. That might be my pick.

Or a trade dollar is always cool as well.

Southgate Coins in Reno probably has the best selection of qood quality CC dollars in all price ranges.

I'd go with a DMPL Morgan, GSA and NGC graded would be a plus.
    Many happy BST transactions

Go for either an 80 or 81 in MS66. PCGS plastic.

    Undervalued in my opinion.

IMHO it would be a 1877cc in PCGS plastic in AU, Next would be a 1870 cc in VF

Based on the very limited information provided, it sounds as if she wants a high grade Morgan dollar, not a Trade or Seated dollar. And I'd let the coin, itself (not the date) and the way it looks help decide the best option.

Since you will be in Long Beach check out Northern Nevada. They will have a lot of coins to look at.

<< <i>Since you will be in Long Beach check out Northern Nevada. They will have a lot of coins to look at. >>

I have been through their inventory. They have two Trade Dollars that fit the bill, but I'm going to try the convention floor to see if I can do better.

I would rather gouge out my eyes than set foot back in that store or even a local show where they have set up a table.

She would be happy with an extremely nice Morgan as long as it's an 1880, but she would much rather have something a little more esoteric and desirable. A straight up seated dollar would be the coolest, but they tend to be too pricey when they come nice. NICE is the operative word here. Above all, I think the coin must have very positive eye appeal for the grade.

I'd go with a mid-grade 1889-CC Morgan in a PCGS holder. Easy to sell, and potentially at a profit, if the need arises in the future. Also, a key date that a lot of people can appreciate.

    I would go with a 83-84 65DMPL,or GSA DPL.Cant go wrong with those choices.image

You sir are assuming and I would go with that since they actually said Trade Dollar they might want a trade dollar, the rest of it you are guessing. If history, look and profit are deciding factors I would say Trade Dollars have more upside while Morgans are more consistently in demand and steady outside of very high end coins. The 1877 cc for one is a pretty rare coin and maximizes the 2k but the chance of here finding the right coin in the short term would be slight at best. Morgans are a dime a dozen and dealers would line up for a customer looking to spend 2k on a CC DMPL or what not. Although I would have to admit I am a little biased to CC Trade Dollars. Tiny Little bit

I agree that I was assuming, and based on the original post, which read, in part: <<he would like to buy him a CC-mint silver dollar that is essentially nice and problem-free>> With no disrespect to Seated or Trade dollars, the odds of locating a Morgan dollar that meets that criteria seem to be much greater.

If the PCGS price guide is accurate, an MS66 1885-CC Morgan sounds perfect!!! Alternatively, you could maybe get an MS65PL 1885-CC. Always liked the '85-CC I guess and I would definitely go for a Morgan over a Trade Dollar unless you know for sure the person is a Morgan hater and really into Trade Dollars image

I agree! If you're going to drop $2K you might as well buy something that is a bit unusual. A Trade Dollar or Seated Dollar would work perfectly! No offense to the Morgan collectors out there, but how much difference is there between a $200 and a $2000 unc Morgan? Not too much. Buy a decent 82/83/84-CC and save $1800 bucks.

I just love GSA DMPL dollars in 65, way undervalued for the amount that have survived, JMHO.

Try Northern Nevada Coin. IMO they're the best with CC material.

    I suggest a nice F/VF 1870-CC Dollar, or a BU 1876-CC Half Dollar.
  • tightbudgettightbudget Posts: 7,299 ✭✭✭
First choice would be a nice, lower grade circulated 1870-CC dollar. Second choice would be a nice DMPL Morgan (preferably an 1885-CC).
  • mustanggtmustanggt Posts: 2,687 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am with the Northern Nevada crowd. They have a much larger inventory than Southgate and I believe they will work with you. At the same time nothing beats some competition like you will have in Long Beach.
  • crypto79crypto79 Posts: 8,623
Northern Nevada is a great place to work with and they always have a monster CC selection. I just got a nice 77cc there myself although at a midgrade

I would buy a lower grade, if I could find one, 1878-CC Trade Dollar.

Ok, nor EXACTLY what your asking, but there is something to be said for intrinsic value.
Suggest below with BING cashbook should be close to $2000

Oops, my bad. He was talking about Southgate, not Northern Nevada.....

I think if someone isn't knowledgeable in coins and they want to get one as a gift, they should just let the collector choose. Everyone has different preferences, and it seems obvious she doesn't know those of her son. Since everyone can interpret "nice" differently, why drop $2k on something that isn't guaranteed? If the collector chooses, then it will definitely be the right coin.

I'm a variety guy so my thoughts immediately jumped to an 1890-CC Tailbar. A PCGS MS62 will cost right around $2000.
    When in doubt, don't.

Renomedphys, is your friend or her son a casual collector or more sophisticated than that? In the former case I think a Morgan dollar would be a good start on a nice collection of CC dollars.

The buyer finally decided to step up and throw in an extra grand for a PCGS VF-35 '70-CC. For what it's worth, I sure hope the new owner likes it.
