Who's Going to the Ontario Coin Show this week (6/24-6/26/10)? UPDATE w/REPORT!

ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,494 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm setting up at this show (opens to the public at 2pm this Thursday, June 24, and goes through Saturday). The past couple shows have been pretty good, and it sure helps that it has a great location, right off the 10 freeway (not far from the 15), right next to the Ontario Airport. Who else is going?

I actually don't know my table number but I have a corner table right up front so you can't miss me when you come in the door. Look for my red and yellow sign that says "The Penny Lady."

There was a change of plans for me so I cannot guarantee that I can make it this time. If I go I will be there either on Thursday or Friday.

Parking at the convention center costs money but you can park at one of the nearby motels for free. A 5-10 minute walk would be involved.

  • Is there a way to find out what dealers will be at this show? I sent email to the
promoters but I did not get a reply.

I'm trying to decide whether it's worthwhile to drive 7 hours each way from
northern California for this show. Have not found a lot of "my" stuff (lower
priced PCGS type) at Santa Clara the past few shows, nor have I found buyers
for my extras (mostly world coins). But I did do ok at Long Beach.

How does this show compare to other shows we've all (Charmy, Todd, and me)
been to: Santa Clara, Long Beach, Buena Park, McIntosh? I did try to get input
    from a few dealers, who said it's similar to Santa Clara in quality but smaller;
and not as nice as the Buena Park show, which is a much smaller show so I'm
not sure the comparison is useful for a collector like me. It sounds like the
comparison to Buena Park depends on other factors like drawing power, show
politics, and the dealer mix (whether they can work well together).

Will any of these dealers be at the show: McIntosh, Doug Bird, Ted Koopman,
Bruce Braga, Arnold Coin Exchange, Fragner, Gene Bruder, Jack Beymer?

    Thanks,
    Mark

I saw McIntosh at the PO today and he is not attending, he has not done this show before. I dont know on the others and have not attended before so I am not much help.

This show a little bigger than Buena Park but BP probably does better since it's been around a lot longer. Al Arnold and the Fragners will be there, not sure about Bruce and Jack - you can email/call them directly to see. Even though John McIntosh may not be here, perhaps Peter will, but again, I'm not sure.

Personally, I think this is a really great up and coming show - as I mentioned, it's in an excellent location, easy to get to, large roomy convention center, and even though this is only the third show, each one has gotten better and bigger. And CKShows does the most advertising of any promoter I know. If this show were 7 hours north of me, I'd still attend.

    Hope this helps.

Yup. I've actually seen a preview of his dealer set up and it looks pretty good, he'll have a great mix of bullion (gold and silver) and also a good mix of coins too, everything from raw worn down US Type to high grade slabbed material. I was impressed with what I saw and think that Jay will do well as long as he sticks to what he knows best and has fun with it.

Wish I could make it to the show sooner, but Ontario is a little ways away so going during the week just won't happen. Saturday will be good though. I remember going to one of their shows there and just thought it was interesting that they had a cash bar near the front of the show... something I hadn't seen at other shows. image What I remember the most though is that the show takes place in the room where I took the California Bar Exam so it has a weird feel for me image

    See you all there Saturday!

I am in the area for some family visiting, I brought some awesome toned 1963 Proof sets for some sharing and PCGS grading, if anyone is interested in seeing any, I can bring them to the show, let me know. I bought 60 sets off a lady who got them from her deceased brother--all sealed, I opened them myself--gold quarters, blue dimes, green franklins--

So far, Thursday was pretty busy when the show opened at 2pm. Sold some pretty coins to another dealer, bought a very nice PCGS AU55 1955/55 and a couple nice Indian cents. Todd is re-photographing my 1914-D and a couple other coins for me. He's just down the aisle from me but a little out of rubberband range. image He seems to be steadily busy with his head buried in his little black cloaked room. He's set up right next to DennisH, and PonyExpress (who is also set up with BNB). Unfortunately (or fortunately), I haven't made any one sale of $1,000 or more so, so at least I won't have to live up to Mark's promise!!! And thanks to DennnisH, some yummy wine sure did flow yesterday afternoon!!! image

Saw a few forum members, Stefani/Coinsarefun, Wei, and a few others who introduced themselves as "lurkers" and not posters. After the show, the show promoters had a happy hour at the hotel, and it was nice being able to sit, have a couple drinks and socialize with the other dealers. Then my son Troy and I went to the San Manuel Indian casino for some holdum.

Today is pretty slow, the public came in bit by bit and it picked up for a while, and now has slowed down again. Hopefully, more public comes in tomorrow since it's a Saturday. The good thing is that most dealers don't usually leave early from this show. The show promoters have done a great job advertising the heck out of this show, so we have high hopes of things picking up tomorrow!

Went yesterday, Charmy showed me some of her personal collection, WOW!

This one is purchased from her, Ex. Charmy Collection

    image

She was yelling at people walking by if they wanted wine, but even after asking what kind she had was not offered any, do you think that was a hint?

She has some killer raw toners, if you like that kind of stuff you will be in awe.

Todd was nice enough to image a wild darkside toner for me.

The vibe of the show was very good and there was no fee except parking. The lighting was good and it was maybe a tad warm inside.
  • I luv that show! Been doing it since its inception. Ez to get to, first rate facilities (convention center & hotel), lots of bullion buyers!!!!!!! image

I agree with Mr. Organic, I love this show too, and plan to do it as long as I can. Frank and Dawn are top notch show promoters, they listen to all feedback and take it to heart, try to make improvements, place ads everywhere, provide fantastic facilities, both the convention center and hotel as Raul said.

And Mark, not quite sure what you mean by "yelling," but it was before noon when that guy asked about my wine, and though I sure love having/serving wine, I do try to keep some semblance of a respectable profile and wait til at least after lunch! image
