Here's the guy that bought the $16,000 Strasburg

link

Since a game-used Strasburg ball sold for $20,000, $16,000 for the card doesn't really seem so bad.

I am more worried about the dude that paid almost 8K for a Fernando Martinez card.

It never pays to overpay for something in the early stages.
  • Good for him. He got what he wanted, and didn't have to overpay, being that he would have gone higher.

All I can say is wow!

I 'do' kind of wish I had that kind of money to spend on my hobby.

Low grade Mante 52 Topps card or a SuperFractor Strasburg card....hmmmm.... What kills me is that how many 1 of 1 cards will be produced in the various sets this year.

If I were this bonehead, I would hope that Strasburg remains hot and then sell the card to another bonehead willing to pay even more than $16k.

It's his money and he can do whatever he wants.

Having said that, if he's looking to adopt, I'm willing to negotiate for myself just in time for Father's Day.

I think as long as the buyer has the money to burn and he's happy then that's all that matters. Of course I could do much better with $16000...I'd pay off my wife's car and get a nice bass boat. image

Crazy money, but I am glad this guy got what he wanted. He seems to have the $$ to spend.

i think its a poor investment. Even if he goes on to be the next nolan ryan.. i doubt that card will be worth more than 16k ten years from now. i could be completely wrong.. but in my opinion.. when SP comes out or other high end products with 1/1 cards.. it will water down the mkt for these. So that peticular card might be one of kind.. but there might be 10 other 1/1 cards

  • There had to be another one or two guys who thought the card was at least 15k. I didn't check the bidding process, but
he's not the only one who would spend that kind of money. Good for them. These guys are good for the hobby. We
need more of them around. I won't knock the people who are active bidders in our hobby. I've sold to some of these guys.
One guy was paying me 3k for cards that other people wouldn't pay 2k for. These guys are great.

Superfractors are the big enchiladas. The best of the best for prospect collectors. Imagine how much his 2010 Bowman Chrome AUTO Superfractor will go for. We'll find out sometime in October when Chrome comes out.

As far as a poor investment, I'm sure someone who drops $16k on a card really isn't worried about that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- It only takes 2 idiots at any given time for this card to sell for much more than $16k in 5 or 10 years. I don't doubt for 1 minute that at least 2 idiots with much $ will be around and using Ebay in 10 years. As foolish as it may sound, this guy could make a profit on this, and enjoy all the publicity that he's getting now for free, which is what I think he was really after in the first place.

As for the dilution comment, I don't think other 1/1s will dilute the value of this card. Previous poster was right on with the term "big enchilada". Allen & Ginter will probably have a 1/1 Wood mini and a 1/1 plate mini for Strasburg, but it won't take away from the much broader appeal of the 1/1 Superfractor. I don't think most vintage collectors know what a superfractor is anyway. It carries more weight among modern collectors than other 1/1s.

  • A business owner could have received some decent advertising from it. Wouldn't know how to manipulate the figures to know if it would be a good buy, but if sold for $9k next spring training as a tax write-off and 2011 income is higher, seems like there could be ways to make this profitable without having him throw back-to-back no-hitters

Doubtful this guy could pull it off, though

I think it would be funny if he got it graded by one of the shoddy companies like GEM.

That is an awesome idea. If I had this card I think I would do just that, just for the hell of it. I mean why not? It's not like the grade is going to matter. My only concern, though, would be that the stoner running the chosen TPG might not return the card.

I'm happy for the guy. He evidently had the desire to get it, and the funds to back up the desire. It's not for me to question his purchases when I spend what I do on other grown men (and ladies) signatures on mostly small cardboard pictures. I'm sure there are plenty of people that think I and everyone else on this board is nuts for our hobby. It's all relative.
