    ..................................................................................................................................................................................................

But again.........................forgetting for a moment their personal appearances and traits how do you fault their business model??

Please apply the standard and example I outlined earlier....................
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a personal basis I have found that as I age I have become more and more aware of the value of time and the value of my personal time in dollar terms. I don't go into any significant time consuming undertaking without considering the value of time expended. Through the years I have spent countless hours traveling to trade shows and viewing collections and have at times been comforted and motivated by an occasional unusually good purchase or 'rip' but on the whole if viewed objectively from a business point of view my hobby and trade show travels have been a lousey investment.

What I do enjoy and value is the simple pleasure of discovery and collecting .

They walk up to random peoples' houses and coerce the people into selling their stuff! Even the cash for gold jerks make their customers come to them. At least then you can say, "Well they walked into the shop..." But those American Pickers jerks go to unsuspecting peoples' homes and talk, talk, talk until the people sell their stuff just to make the jerks go away. GREAT business model...

While they do some cold calls usually to homes where people have obvious large piles of stuff around the house and yard, most of their visits are based on "leads" they recieved along the way.

Antique dealers have used cold calling for years, just ask any farmer in New England.

How do you think those people they visit or their heirs would do at an estate auction??

What do you do when they say...ahhh OK I'll give your asking price. Now you're SOL.

I watched the year end recap of this show, it showed stuff they bought in earlier shows and what they actually resold them for...I was less than impressed. They had stuff like a bicycle some expert said was worth 10K that'd they'd bought for say 2500....Sounded like a steal until the year end show with the bike selling for 3000...Big deal, and that's how it went with most of the other stuff...

    Sheesh... >>

100% of the proceeds go to the non-profit organization of the YMCA.
    It's a charity auction.

    Why the, "Sheesh"?

I think they should tweak the show, American Pickers.

First, Frank and Mike show up unexpectedly at some old senile widow' s home. The nice old lady is so grateful to talk to anyone, she sells all of her collectibles, coins, and family heirlooms at below rock bottom prices to those fine young men. (She really has no idea what she's doing) Then Bubba, the widow's son, comes home. Well call it "American ButtWhoopin"!

I think we are forgetting the TV factor here in these shows. Much of Pawn Stars is staged where the people selling are not actually selling and they know what they have. There was a thread on the currency side about this where a U.S note was featured but the "seller" is a well known currency dealer in Las Vegas. The producers called him. Also, regarding American Pickers, these guys are not ripping off little old ladies in the middle of the night. Have you thought about how many cameras, lights, producers and crew are at these houses? The people know they are part of a TV show and are willing participants.

    No, not interested enough.
Are you disparaging someone who would be willing too?

If i do not leave my gate closed i have all sorts of people drive up my driveway and then leave their car parked in the middle of it . They get out and walk over to the pasture i keep my donkeys in and feed them, take there pics etc. I figure one of these days someone will probably posion them. It never ceases to amaze me what people will do. I have found people in the middle of my property with fishing poles in hand. They think that in this day and age any parcel of land close to the city that is bigger than a house lot belongs to the government. LOL

If the american pickers show up i bet i will not make the out take clips.

30 years ago when i was a kid my parents owned a lot of property and a nice small housing development had a short common fence on part of it. Our house was on top of a hill and you could pretty much see all corners of the property from the kitchen window. While eating one day we noticed a group of 4 or 5 people walking across it. My dad never liked tresspasers and the whole place was clearly maked with signs. I got in the truck and down the hill we went, my dad would always roll the window down so the barrel would be visisble ( and besides he once shot a hole thru the window and door once shooting a skunk) The trespassers got all excited and were trying to downplay the whole deal. One of the trespassers was famous actor and recoding artist in his prime then. My dad told them to walk a little faster and i just wanted an autograph. I did not get the autograph.image

I would think most of the pickers is totally scripted and they do not just bust up onto someones porch, some old people have no issue showing you the end of a gun.
