When did PCGS begin Designating CAMEO and DC for Proof coins?

Especially the pre-64 coins...

    Mr. Tomaska worked with PCGS and NGC to help them establish the CAM and DCam parameters in the year [ insert year here ]

    Definitely 1994 or before. I submitted a 1961 Franklin Proof and it came back PF66 DCAM in 1994. I sold it for megabucks back then.

    I was a grader at NGC from 1991-1998 and don't recall Mr. T's helping to establish parameters for the designations.
  • I believe on silver and gold it was the early 90's. Copper was latter...2001 or 2002.

    After 1991. I asked them about it then and the response was that there was no demand. I think it was 1993-4 seems right to me.

    I think this may shed some light on the question. Here is a quick photo of a 1995s Jefferson with no Dcam designation. Trust me, the coin is fully deep cameo on both sides but is not designated as such. This would suggest that PCGS was not designating cameos earlier than 1995. However, it is possible that you had to request cameo designations back in those days - I don't remember for sure that far back.

    That may be so on the minor coinage, but my 1962 PR68 DCam was designated as such when I bought if from R & I in 1992.

    This is an incorrect assumption.

    Looking through old Teletrade catalogs (I'm a packrat!), I've found that ANACS and Hallmark were using the Cameo designation by January 1990, NGC was using it by September 1990. The first Teletrade auction I could find with PCGS Cameo coins was their auction #424 of April 23, 1992, where there were a couple of Franklins listed as cameos.

    Ahh, Robec's comment brought back a memory. PCGS was designating cameos earlier than 1995 but only up to a certain date - maybe it was 1964 as the OP originally asked. Coins minted after 1964 (or whatever the date was) were not designated until later.

    I stand corrected.

    This PR 1995-W was graded in 1995 and as you can see it is missing the DCAM designation.

    This should dispel the fact the at least Franklin's were receiving Cameo and DCam designations in 1992. Note the certification number on the receipt is the same as the slab. No trickery here.image The only question is why I paid so much.

    I don't think 125,000.00$ is too much paid ;
