New PCGS submission and a few grading comments.....

First of all, ignore the black spot on the "G" on the obverse. I'm going to have to take this one again; black speck on the coin.

This coin was holdered as an ICCS MS 64. I like to try toned ICCS coins, MS 64 or better, because PCGS factors in
eye appeal and color and ICCS doesn't seem to.

In the last couple of submissions I've gotten a few PCGS upgrades and surpises-an ICCS MS 65 dime upgraded to MS 66(color coin),
a Canada Half I plucked from a PL set that had the typical milky transparent toning that PCGS hates came back PL 67. Shocker that!
I did have some hopes though, since it had a very nice cameo and when you tilt the coin it's apparent that whiteish toning
actually has some nice color to it. Apparently they rotated it a few times and gave it the grade I'd hoped for.(I'm about 1 for 50 nowimage

Finally a George 11 British shilling that NGC graded AU 58 came back MS 62. Again I had hopes that the very light apparent wear
was really strike weakness and thankfully PCGS saw it that way.

That was the good news from the submission where they body bagged a Victoria Half Penny that I also had high hopes for......

    Did the 59 get graded or is it at PCGS now?

    The 1959 is packed up and ready to go to PCGS tomorrow.

    The Victoria penny is the one I posted in this thread; cleaned apparently.....

    They bagged it as "cleaned" Zohar. And I guess it was since a few of the forum members saw evidence
    of cleaning that I didn't spot before I submitted it.


    It's curious though.....

    If you carefully bathe a coin in EZ, acetone or other solution you'll seldom see it bagged as "cleaned". In fact NGC
    even offers a service to do that. Entire coin dipped, gets a grade.

    But if you take a small cotton swab and remove a microscopic carbon speck, then the coin is, uh, "cleaned"

    Dubious rationale to say the least......

    Send it in for conservation, additional fee for the grading firm. Do it yourself, marked as cleaned.
