Am I developing an interest in Painted Coins?

Painted, Colored; whatever you choose to call them. We've all seen 'em...



I used to make fun of these but I think I might be developing an interest in them for their kitsch appeal.......I mean they are so horrible that they are charming in an odd way


Feel free to post any you have.......Went to a local store today and came within an inch of purchasing one (an SBA at that!! it was the ugliest!) The shop also had a bicentennial quarter that was tastefully done (if you can use the word tasteful with these)

So, I'm guessing I'm alone here......Does anyone actually collect these??? Could a type set be assembled??




As a side note, our counterparts across the pond in England have long had an affinity for enameled coins which have the same looks as our painted coins.......Not sure why the difference but enameled coins have always had a fairly strong collector following

    I almost bought a painted $10 gold eagle once. Only because it was a 1999 W unc., but decide against it.

    Greg, I have a small collection of painted coins, but I don't think they are the same style you are collecting...

    It may be hard to make out the date from the scan, but it's 1918. This coin resides in my main collection because it's the best (and only) 1918 I have. My 1943 quarter also resides in my main collection, despite being painted red, but no scan or photo of it.

    Billy, i think i have heard those called "Jukebox coins" before (waitresses in greasy spoons would contribute their own money to 'keep the party going' in an effort to loosen up the crowd and increase tips; at the end of the night they would get their marked coins back)

    Greg, I have heard the same, but I don't know if that would still be true for the state quarters...Jukeboxes are few and far between these days!

    I am not sure if some have been enamelled rather than painted

    and I have seen some enameled 1800's stuff go for big bucks

    A school teacher friend told me she had gone to a seminar on pre elementary education. It seems one of the biggest problems was that the kids had no imagination. They have been raised if front of color TV's and lifelike video games and evrything is right there in front of them in living color. No need to have to think or use their imagination. Todays's kids cannot watch black and white TV for that reason. Must we color our coins so today's generation can understand what they ar looking at?

    I thought that this Peace Dollar was tastefully done. Miss Liberty is looking good and the eagle perches high over the horizon. It reminds me of how Ted Turner put color to the old black and white movies making them more lifelike.

    Greg, maybe because these coins were enameled in the 19th C.?
