    Which would you rather have?

    1. The Strasburg.

    2. This Mantle PLUS $2,000.00

    3. This BABE RUTH PLUS $5,000.00.

    How could ANYONE pick #1???????

Yeah, with all due respect, the two options you gave are just a different side of the same coin: inflated prices for a graded card. Why would anyone pay $14k+ for an off-center card that can be bought in a half grade lower for $10,000 less (PSA 8.5).

In no way am I defending the ending price of that Stasburg, it's idiotic. But your examples just highlight further idiocy in the hobby.

    Jeff, I agree 100%

Dumb $$ on that Mantle, and the WWG Ruth is 3X too much for an issue that not many collect in the US.

Wasnt long ago a NRMT/MT '59 Mantle was a $500 card, and there are thousands and thousands of them.

This should mean that the auto'd Super coming out later in Bowman Chrome should fetch 20K pretty easy.

    That'll be fun to watch!

The winning bidder paid a little more than $1000 per letter of his name. Cool.

I think that's the way I'll start bidding on cards, but I don't know any one letter named players I could afford.

Congrats to the seller of this card. Condolences to the buyer. I wonder if the players' agent or a family member bought the card?

The winning bidder has a feedback score of only 45, and this is the only sports card he/she has bid on this month. Seems a little odd.

Re: the final price: I don't follow the modern card market very closely. Is it commonplace for these contrived 1 of 1 cards to command high prices? Can't the card companies just keep making more of these any time they want? I don't understand the appeal.

I wont say how stupid the buyer was if its a legit purchase...That's because, if it is a legit buyer, he probably has more money to throw around on other bad/high risk purchases.

While I don't get it either, I do see the bigger picture. There's a reason that it's referred to as prospecting. You have to spend money to make money.

I think someone mentioned this previously, but I would bet the winning bidder has some affiliation with Topps. I can't remember I saw anything about baseball cards get this kind of coverage.

I'd rather have this Strasburg 1/1 and $16393.

I'm glad the card went for what it did. The publicity is good for our hobby, so in that regard, CONGRATS! I would much rather take that kind of money and invest it into some sweet vintage! For that kind of money, you could almost purchase a 51 Bowman Mantle PSA 7 AND a 51 Bowman PSA 7 Mays.

I agree that this is nothing but good news for our hobby! People are realizing that baseball cards can still demand a huge premium today like they did 5 years ago. I think that this year is a huge turning point for the hobby with the Million Card Giveaway fetching national attention and now this. Topps is doing a great job and hopefully we will see an influx of new collectors and new $$$ turning hands.
