PCI green label and old ICG-how accurate for ms/pr 70 Buffalo $1's?

drfishdrfish Posts: 948 ✭✭✭✭
A dealer has a group of 2001 Buffalo $1's in the PCI green label and old ICG slabs at a decent price. How accurate are these grades likely to be by current major TPG standards?Decent or fat chance that 30% would cross to PCGS at 70?Thanks for your input...

I would think about 5 to 10% would cross to PCGS MS/PR 70.

Your only chance of getting a 70 is to submit raw. PCGS will not cross 70s from other TPGs.

when did they switch from the green label to the gold?
I sent in a 2001 buff. when they first came out (along with some morgans) and they came back in the gold labels.

Actually I can submit them for grading but PCGS won't leave them in their holders-heres a Q/A from the PCGS website....Question: If someone were to submit a bunch of MS70 or PR70DCAM for a crossover at any grade and the coins were found deserving of that grade, would PCGS put them into MS70 or PR70DCAM holders? I know there is a risk to the submitter because there is a high probability that the coins won't meet the high standard of PCGS, but if the coin is worthy, would it cross?

Answer: Yes, if the coins are worthy, we'll put them in MS- or PR-70 holders. The reason PCGS does not offer a crossover service at the 70 grade is that it is impossible to properly evaluate a coin through a layer of plastic. If we were to crack a potential candidate out of a competitor's holder and the coin subsequently failed to qualify as a 70... well, you can imagine the problems that would cause

If you re-read it, it clearly says PCGS doesn't cross them over, and they also won't crack the coins. Buy these at whatever the going rate is for a standard proof. Much as I find the MS/PR70 thing a scam, it's well established that coins outside of PCGS or NGC holders hold no premium as high grade moderns.

A fool and his money are soon parted. Keep that sentence in mind.

If you want a PCGS MS/PF 70, then buy them that way. Paying perfectly good money for MS/PF 70 in these other slabs is a complete waste. If you truly just don't want your money, PM me and I will send you a Paypal invoice where you can send your money to.

Now, if you are hoping to sell these for a profit, I see nothing wrong with that, but pay what the going price is for those items and don't try to cross them. You will be glad you listened to the advice in this thread of answers.

.Rampage perhaps you would be less patronizing if i'd told you the coins were priced very close to raw levels.....I would think that the odds of one of these coins going 70 would be better than that of a non- cherry picked raw coin. For example if I sent a bunch of NGC 70's into PCGS ,I know that most would come back as 69's but I'd probably get more 70's than if I sent in the same number of raw coins. I looked at the populations on these-if I sent a raw Buffalo $1 into PCGS I'd have about a 3% chance of getting a pr70 and at NGC the odds go up to 13%(Couldn't find any pops for old PCI/ICG's).With other series, many on this board feel that PCI green label and old ICG coins are fairly accurately graded-ifs thats the case it should increase the odds - but when you start at 3% I guess thats not saying much.....I'll call PCGS tomorrow and get the scoop on sending in other TPG's 70's-I interpret it as you can't cross at less than a 69 cause they have to crack them to see if they're 70's.

Fat chance. Buy a PCGS 70 instead of playing the crapshoot game.

Edited to add: Even if they are priced as raw coins, it's still much easier just to buy that one 70 if that's what you're looking for.
