Stephen Strasburg card that's definetly NOT worth $10K or the headline

Definetly NOT worth over $10K or the headline

Geez...you could get a nice 1953 Topps set in about EX-MTish condition for that much! And all this money over one of a billion so called 1/1's and for a guy who's not pitched once in the majors??? In the famous words of John Stossel, give me a break...

The only problem is, today is 2010, guys don't care about players who played in 53, the more time goes on, the more people care about the next Pujols, and the less
they care about crusty old men who played half a century ago. This is the future of sportscards, like it or not.

Yeah, I really don't have much desire to own a Strasburg Super or '51B Mantle.

    To each their own.

In as much as I love vintage cards, the complaining about this card and the price its realizing is basically as annoying as the whining 12 year olds on the Beckett forums.

    edited to add:

    Peace and love.

Agreed. On every message board I am a part of there are some people trash-talking this card and the price. People just like to B&moan, and I think a lot of it is jealousy. Who wouldn't love to sell a card for $15,000+. This card is just proof that our hobby is alive and well. Nothing wrong with it at ALL. Haters gonna hate. lol

Now.... much of the desire in owning this card is because it is a bit famous and now national news.

Big $$ will enter bidding, these guys are sometimes not serious collectors, they like to buy stuff for braggin' rights

To some people $20,000 is like $20 or $2 to us. Chump change. And these are the guys who like to brag they now own this nationally famous hype card.

BTW auction now has over 62,000 page looks and over 5245 watchers.

Reminds me of that Beer Can that sold on eBay for $20K a few years ago,.........
but Id rather have the Clipper Beer Can than this card or even a '51 Mantle, anyday.... image its naturally rare!
  • A fool and his money are soon parted. What happened to Ben McDonald, Brian Taylor, Todd Van poppel, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Dice, etc. Buying a card like this would be just as stupid as investing in Beanie babies.

Hey if the guy gets the money , more power to him.

People forget that collectables must stand the test of time. People pay big dollars for things they have sentimental attachments to.

Anyone wanna buy a Tony banks etopps card for $500.00? LOL

  • nothing that strasburg will ever achieve will justify the value of that card. pure artificial scarcity.
  • gumbyfangumbyfan Posts: 5,168 ✭✭✭
Actually, as with all collectibles, the card is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Just because you're not willing to pay for it doesn't mean it's not worth that price to someone else.

For example, I don't think mid-70's stars in PSA 7 are worth buying. I'd rather pay more for the higher grades.

What classic video game forums do you haunt? I don't read too many but would love to join a good one. Right now, I mostly stick with the Retro Gamer magazine forum. Great magazine, excellent forum. Only drawback to both is that they're UK-based which is not a problem, per se, it just results in coverage of stuff I don't care about and non-coverage of stuff I do care about (the Apple II, for example).
