Well I was there and apparently that's the way it went down...

    well...case closed then.
  • << stats never go "out the window", it's simply just a much smaller sample size...but the stats noted above showed that the Bruins were playing over their collective heads a bit and due for a 'market correction'. Sure any one team can get hot or pummeled in one aspect of the game...have one galactically bad 7-2 game, and inflate any given stat any one direction...but of course there are a myriad of other factors in any given series...ie today's Hawks/Sharks game...5 penalties called against the Hawks, zero against the Sharks. No one can realistically think the Sharks didn't hook, hold, or interfere once in 60 minutes. >>

The intent of my comment was to point out that the beauty of the Stanley Cup Playoffs rests in how upsets can happen, regardless of what the math says. The '86 and '93 Habs were teams of destiny. Or so it would seem since the stats say their wins shouldn't have happened. Think of the 1988 Flames. How likely is it for a team to come back from 3-0 down in a game 7? Not likely and probably less than a 5% chance, if that. How likely is it for a team to come back from 3-0 down in a SERIES?? It's been done twice -- err, I mean 3 times. Now add both together and do the calculation. Did the calculator just explode?

Don't get me wrong, I believe in the stats -- long term. Fantasy hockey makes me a stats hound -- follow trends and buy low/sell high. But the playoffs are different and even though I'm 14 times zones, 2 continents and an ocean away there's nothing better than playoff hockey.

Except when the Flyers win. Worse when they poleaxe us 6-0. Ouch. The stats say it can't happen again.
Collecting HOF RC's in hockey, baseball, football and basketball. A fool's errand some have said.
