The ABC's of coins.

Let's see if we can do a complete run IN ORDER of coins by either their designer (surname, e.g. last name) or by mint mark. Given that some of the letters will be pretty exotic, mint marks (or inferred mint places) from ancients and darkside are considered OK.

I'll start with Ahr (Jack L.) who designed the reverse of the Bicentennial quarter (which is one of my favorite modern designs);

Next up is B. Gosh, can anyone think of at least one designer with the last initial being a B?

    TDEC was right.

    I've waited 5 hours and no one has a Barber here? Jeez Loueez! You don't even need a picture of your own coin, it can just be something you "grab" from the web...

    OK the next designer OR mint mark needs to begin with a C. Come on folks this ain't rocket science...

    E is for Muldenhutten.

    Ok, you said Darkside, you can't get much darker than this:

    And, because darkside is permitted, how about an Italian 1867 10L struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England?

    I am pretty sure nation of origin wasn't one of SkyMan's criteria, so India and Japan are out.

    So getting back to the letter I, the US Mint designer and sculptor-engraver Michael C. Iacocca worked with Edgar Zell Steever, IV on the Robert Kennedy medal. So this should suffice for the letter "I"

    It's entirely possible to go through the whole alphabet using just mintmarks on French coins. France had several dozen mints operating during the ancien regime and they used up all 26 letters. They then started using doubled letters (eg. AA, BB etc), symbols such as &, the number 9, and a little picture of a cow.

    Anyway, moving on... the letter O. Since this thread is in the US forum, we should put in pics of US coins when possible. Here's my one and only O-mint Morgan (it's an 1887):

  • This half dime was minted in Philadelphia. I suppose if you wanted a mintmark you'd have to get a modern coin from the mother mint.
