    Yes, it does look like it was struck through wood. Has that ragged look.

    Hmmmm...my wild guess is that it was struck through a woolly caterpillar that had entered the mint in order to get warm. This means the coin was struck in late November, not long before the December Blizzard of '87.

    Here is a struck through wood coin. You can still see the sliver in the 0 of 1880.

    If I had to guess, I would say lamination that got peeled away.

    If you look your coin , your wood sliver sits on top o the date; in mine it was on the planchet BEFORE the coin was struck. Yours can't be a struck through I don't believe.
