Net Grading

So, I make the mistake of buying sight unseen, from a family friend no less. He was in town visiting and found out that I collected some coins. I believe he is 85 years old now. He convinced me that he had a MS64 1931-S Lincoln and he would sell it to me. It's one I needed, so I coughed up the cash and sent it home with him, with the agreement that he would send me the coin. A few months passed, and no coin. So, I called up the parents and asked them if they could ask thier friend about it. Apparently, the gentleman had a significant stroke a couple of days after he returned home and is now in bad shape. But, my mom did ask the man's wife about it and she sent me the coin.

That's the big story of why I can't send this back. I wouldn't have the heart to ask them for the money.

Anyway, below is the coin. It has obviously been cleaned as some point. You can see the luster, but it's very flat. Do you have any guesses at what net grade I should speculate? I really don't want to waste the money to send it in. It's not staying in my collection. .

A 1943 copper Lincoln will still only buy a gumball out of the machine, but you can purchase the machine and the store with that same cent.

I think you have already net-graded it with the identifier that matters: Net-Not staying in my collection.

I think I see slight rub (the image on my monitor is odd, rather gray)---does it look 64 in hand, or 58?. If the latter, the market retail value will be low, probably $100.

Sorry to hear about this. You're in a spot and there's not much you can do about it.

It's hard to make a call based on the photos. The chatter on the shoulder, the AM in AMERICA, the O in ONE, are common and from the planchet. But there are scattered hits (eye brow, left sheaf, lapel, collar, and nicks in the fields and lettering). I don't know what's going on to the left of the left wheat straw. Toning or PMD?

I would guess net-62. Bummer about the cleaning.

  • The chatter didn't bother me. Just the lack of color. I've got a 64 29-s and 30-s, and this one just doesn't belong.

I have a customer that needs a 31-s and he does not care if it has been cleaned. He just needs one for a decent price. What kinda price are you gonna ask if you are selling the coin?
He may be interested if the price is right. He likes them anyway he can get them along as they are priced in his price range. Said he is working on several books of the #1 Whitman folder for his grand kids.

Net grading is always a crapshoot, some people will net grade problems down lower than others.

If it's truly got no wear I'd net this at MS60, you could probably get $150 for it on eBay with good pictures.

For this date it might actually smooth the sale if you can get in into a slab, even if just as a "gennie" or "details graded."

Doesn't it depend if you are buying or selling?
