Top 100 bag toned Rainbow Morgans in existence

Let's see 'em! Post your pics of coins you feel that would qualify for Top 100 status. Morgans only, bag toned only (no target toned, end of rolls, or anything else).

I can't seem to post an image over 50k, but here are some of the greatest bag toned Morgans I've ever seen:
http://www.paragonnumismatics.com/viewpicar.html

I especially love: The Comet, The Minneapolis Monster, Blue Lightning, Neon Rainbow, and Stars & Stripes Forever.

Legend's archive and inventory of gsaguys coins are mind-blowing.

Numisvision's Battle Creek Moose is otherworldly: http://www.numisvision.com/1-MS66-NGC-ca-16-pr-1593-pg-1.html

That should get the ball rolling! Now let's see your Top 100.

  • I own and have owned some nice ones but nothing that would make the top 1,000 let alone the top 100. Ron Sirna's TCCS starter coin might make the list......as would the MS68 monster that used to belong to Ron and then Sunnywood but I don't have pictures of any of those. image

This coin clearly belongs in the group ... it is an 1881-S PCGS MS68+
This coin was previously in ANACS MS68, PCGS MS67, and PCGS MS68 holders.
The coin belonged to Ron Sirna, and was acquired by me for the Sunnywood Collection.
As 1881-S was the most common date, with the most colorful toners available, I wanted to find the ULTIMATE example for that slot in my set. I think this coin qualifies.
It now resides in the Simpson-Sunnywood Collection.
(Mr. Simpson graciously offered to keep the Sunnywood name on his set. The coins were all regraded PCGS secure plus, with many important "plus" designations awarded and a few full upgrades. His Registry set includes 94 coins from my set plus three Sonnier coins that I had always wanted to put in my set, but which were not available until just after I sold the set.)

    image

    image

There are several other coins in the Simpson-Sunnywood Collection that I would propose for the top 100.

Check out the Bingham-Sunnywood-Simpson 1882-S PCGS MS67+, gorgeous color in hand:

    image

Also this 1880-S which I believe still holds the record for price realized at auction for a common date toner ... this one is PCGS MS68 CAC, and brought $23,000 at auction. Provenance New York Connoisseur's Collection; Sunnywood; Simpson.

    image

Of course the Simpson-Sunnywood Collection has MANY others worth looking at, including the only Battle Creek coin that I know of in a PCGS MS67 holder, this 1886:

    image

... plus many OUTRAGEOUS dated rainbow toners, such as this mind-blowing 1879-P (yes, "P" not "S" !!!)

    image

Check out the new images of the Simpson-Sunnywood coins at Mr. Simpson's Registry Set:

Sunnywood Love that coin you purchased from Ron. Whe I first met Ron, that coin drew me to his case.

It was in the 67 holder at that time.

AuroraBorealis, that Armageddon textile toner is killer! Definitely Top 100 material in my book!

Nothing in numismatics compares to a world class exceptionally toned Morgan. Some of these coins bring 20-30x book value, but if anything they are still undervalued IMO. Would you trade one of those monsters for 20 or 30 unremarkable white coins of the same date/grade? I wouldn't.

I think this one should make the list. IMO this is the best 1885 CC, currently resides in an old green pcgs ms67 holder with a cac sticker, I assume it may have been housed in a gsa holder at one time. This coin realized the second highest price of any 1885 CC to sell at auction beat only by the jack lee 68, as far as color goes this coin is far superior to the jack lee specimen IMO and IMO better then the sunnywood/simpson 85 cc

    image

For those of you that are fans of the juice factor, oddly enough the coin looks closer to this second juiced image in hand although when this image was taken I had my old clunker camera image
    image

There are a few other very nice 1885 CC's floatiing around including a decent great fals collection one as well as at one time mike defalco had a very nice example although I am not sure if he stills owns that one.

IMO between the battle creeck collection, sunnywood/simpson morgans and the sonnier collection I think the top 100 morgans are pretty much covered.

The most outrageous toned Morgans are generally one of a handful of common dates, including "S" mints 1879 thru 1882, "O" mints 1883 thru 1885; and P-mints 1885 thru 1887. Among these are amazing Battle Creek and Binion coins, and famed monsters such as Andy Kimmel's "Neon Monster" and "Comet," as well as the coins I posted above, and more coins formerly owned by Bryan Sonnier (including some incredible CC's), Lloyd Cowle, and of course Mike DeFalco.

Now let's look instead at some of the other dates ... here are a few more candidates from Mr. Simpson's collection, notable for the combination of date, grade, and banded rainbow color:

1878 8TF PCGS MS66+ ex Larry Shapiro; Sunnywood; Simpson

    image

1880-CC PCGS MS66+ ex Bryan Sonnier; Simpson

    image

1883-O PCGS MS66 ex Sunnywood; Simpson

    image

1885-CC PCGS MS66 ex Jim Curtis; Sunnywood; Simpson

    image

1886-O PCGS MS64+ ex Sunnywood; Simpson (ex. rare with rainbow toning)

    image

1887-O PCGS MS64+ ex Dale Larsen; Sunnywood; Simpson (very rare with rainbow bag toning)

I must say, that this thread contains specimens of Morgan Dollars,
where the colors and condition are so ultimate ,as to be unable to be improved
upon in any degree. We are indeed fortunate, to have been able to see pictures
of such magnificent toned coins. Untill folks have seen this thread and its coins,
they really do not have any idea what a truly fine toned dollar should look like.image

I can't take a coin's photo to save my life. Here are a couple of Binion's I purchased from Teletrade. Maybe if I sent them to PCGS the colors would come out brighter. Worked out better for me as prices were lower back then. But, then again, I'd lose the Binion pedigree.

Lots of juicy scans in this thread. Some of these owners of $2,000+ toners should get some quality photos of them from a competent photog.
  • Does anyone know where I can find a guide as to how to pay for markup for rainbow toned coins?

I know the basics such as observe toning worth more, brigther colors worth more, PCGS/NGC a must, etc... but how can you tell whether to pay 2x the standard price, or 4x it?
