6,000th Post Give Away - Winner Announced in last Post ---- Barber Dime Comparisons

MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
With the occasion of making my 6,000th post - I have decided to have our fellow readers wade thru "some"
images and decide which coin was the first coin I purchased raw for my Dansco album.

Last year, my good friend Glenn Holsonbake convinced me to submit my raw coins along with his for
a bulk submission. Although I had already completed a certified collection of Barber Dimes and was very happy
with it, I thought I might get a few upgrades out of the bulk submission. I only ended up with a couple as I remember.

I do know that my raw 1906-S came back as a 58 and that my friend DIMEMAN was waiting in the wings
for my old AU 55. I really had no intention of selling off my old raw coins - now recently holdered. I had them for
what seems as if forever. A newly introduced [ and now good friend ] collector asked to buy the entire set at my
prices [ which was a huge task - as I had no idea what current retail was for the grades I had received from PCGS
on my Submission. ]

This was a once in a lifetime deal for both myself and the buyer. We struck a fair deal - and I transferred ownership
to the JMW Barber Dime Collection. I still have all of my precertified coins - and a few of the coins I submitted to PCGS
which were nicer than what I bought precertified. The new owner was able to pick up some great coins - especially the
overdate in AU 58 [ as I had just bought a second example ].

Okay - guess the date and Mint Mark [ one entry per reader ] and win this Barber Dime from my third set:

I originally amended the title of the Thread - to show that the newly certified raw coins had companion pieces
previously certified. Here they are for a side by side comparison. Enjoy the pictures !!

Here are pictures taken by Todd Pollock of BluCCphotos:

Some of the grades were a disappointment - some were as expected - none were a surprise. I've had this collection
in a completed state since 1996. Most of the raw coins were purchased from Dave Lawrence in 1994 and 1995 before
it was known that he had ALS. Dave was the driving force to complete this collection; when Dave decided to only
handle certified coins, he offered me all of his raw Almost Uncirculated Barber Dimes. It was a major purchase for me
at the time and he allowed me to pay a percentage per month for four months or so.

The "holes" in the above pages were coins that I bought precertified - and are assigned to my certified Barber Dime
Collection which I started in 2008 and finished late last year with the addition of an 1897-O. This collection wouldn't
be complete without the help of one of our Board Members, Tom Casey. It was Tom who helped me finish this set.

Now, with the raw coins certified, I was able to upgrade a few coins in my precertified set, not too many, regretably.

As this submission was a bulk type submission, if the coin didn't grade, it was not holdered and will be returning in a Body Bag.
No reason was given for the Body Bag, to the best of my knowledge. I had submitted a few Dimes a couple of years ago and
I was distraught that of the eight coins submitted, only one coin holdered, the 1901-S. The rest were not graded due to Artifical
Color. You'll scratch your head when you compare the coins and the grades assigned - or not assigned - as the case may be.
This collection sat in a Dansco album for at least fifteen years. I know the No Grades were because of the toning - maybe they
thought I was the "Color Artist"... but I assure you, its the Dansco to blame. Then again, I can't argue with the experts, they are
far more knowledgable than I am when it comes to grading.

Individual images of each graded coin have been taken by Todd Pollock, BluCCphotos .
There are additional images attached for comparison purposes
of the Dimes in my pre-certified collection.

EDIT: Thursday - August 5, 2010

The " No-Grades" were submitted to NGC.

As part of my Membership package, ATS, I received a voucher for five coins' grading.
Five coins submitted to NGC: 1893-S [ AU Details - Cleaned ]; 1897-O [ AU Details - Cleaned ]
1896-S = AU 55; 1898-P = AU 58; 1898-S = XF 45. [ Todd Pollock will image these five coins at ANA ].
The images I received from NGC were just scans, sorry to say.

As of 8/5/2010, I have not received my "Economy Grades"
on the other No Graded coins from PCGS - I hope the
key date remaining [ 1903-S ] gets a true grade and not
a Net Grade... or whatever they're calling it these days.

    The coins look beautiful.
Not sure I can make any sense of why so many got no grades.

Could that possibly be Todd's fault? image
    When in doubt, don't.

What was your motivation for getting them slabbed? I kinda like them in the album.

    RYK,

As I mentioned, I had the set in the Dansco for about 15 years,
and I agree, I really liked the raw set as well.

I brought the Dansco with me to FUN this past January to show
    Glenn Holsonbake [ Ponyexpress8 ] and Jon Potts [ DIMEMAN ]
and they thought I'd be able to pick up a few 58's for my 1st tier Dime set.

As it turned out, all I got was one AU 58 upgrade for the set... 1906-O ... replacing the 55 in my 1st set,
and, as I already had the 1914-P in PCGS 58 - I now need to a side by side comparison.

    The 1892-P and 1912-P in my 1st set were AU 58 - now, I've got MS 62 & MS 63 respectively.

Now, I get to enjoy the two sets merged together. The raw set's images in their new PCGS holders
will be complimented with the previously PCGS holdered collection's images.

    ------------------------------------------------

    Todd: PM sent.

    ------------------------------------------------

Images of 2nd tier set are arriving - and will be posted soon.

My 1st tier set's images will be done with in the next two weeks - depending on Todd's schedule.

I'll do a side by side comparison of each date and MM.

Over the last two nights, I've downloaded and tagged the newly holdered Dimes.
I have already opened up my second set of Dimes [ Michael F. Hayes - Barber Dimes II ]
and have all the images attached.

Here is the start of the set:

    1892-P PCGS 62

What did it cost to have them graded, including the shipping?

Mike - I had the pleasure of seeing your book of dimes as Glenn's table at FUN. I loved the varied toning and seeing them all together at once. It was a privilege.

Glenn Holsonbake worked out the details; he put together a huge
bulk submission - three collections were submitted, I believe.

I gave Glenn a retainer to handle the submission and get images taken
thru BluCCphotos. Contact Glenn directly for further info.

Thanks, Catbert, I remember meeting you at Glenn's table as well. Glad you
liked the Dansco album. I hope to see you again in Boston this August; I'll be
the rookie behind Glenn's table this ANA.

I think that set would have looked really great in a Capital holder. If you were or are getting ready to sell the coins I could see getting them slabbed. Otherwise they look much better in the raw state.

    Very nice set.

Thanks, Ken. I think you're right, the Barber Dime raw
set would have looked fantastic in a Capital Lucite Holder.

Now that most have been holdered - I'm going to maintain
the set and possibly add to it with complimentary coins.

Here's a close up of the next coin in the set:

Thanks, Brian. It was a very intensive two - three year search for the Dimes; 95% of which were
purchased in raw state for the Dansco. It was an enjoyable experience. The end result was a great
looking set of Dimes. The holes in the album are for coins that I did not want to crack out due to
    their value [ ie: 1895-O in PCGS 58 ].

Really cool set of Barber Dimes no matter if they're in plastic or not. I don't believe I've ever seen so many AU55s in one place before.

How many of these were already toned before they made it into the album? Or were all of them untoned 15 years ago?

Thanks for the compliments; most if not all of the Dimes were either
very light golden colored or creamy white. The years in the Dansco
album brought the toning. I remember back in 1996 when the set was
almost completed, I showed the album to a co-worker and her first reaction
was that she couldn't understand why coins of that age were all so new looking.
    [ She meant white - untoned ].

I had no idea that they'd tone to the degree that they had.
    This was my first experience with a Dansco album;
prior to this, all of my albums were Whitman Bookshelf albums
[ those albums didn't tone coins anywhere near the way the Dansco has.]

Here is the next small group...

Were you very disappointed in that some of the 58s were graded down to 45s? I really enjoyed viewing your Barbers. Now to open up a can of worms. You said a number of times that you were placing them back into the Dansco for more time. Is this not a version of Artificial Toning? 10-14 years in the Dansco changed the colors significantly, yet in the Blue Whitman album, there was not much toning. Whether this is AT or NT, as Ricko would say, it's still tarnish. Can we understand PCGS's dilemma?

Keep up the posts, they are all great coins. I think Todd's images are the best way to enjoy Barber dimes, but I'm an old guy.
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
I was always led to believe that what ever toning happened as a matter of circumstance - ie: album toning
was natural toning or toning acquired in a small brown Kraft envelope [ which was how must dealers in
"Days of Old" stored their raw coins.] If I had the time and patience, I'd start cracking out more of my
other Barber denominations which may be too white - such as the Quarters and Halves, maybe a decade
or so in a Dansco would make them more colorful.

Artifical toning is when the toning process is accelerated - ie: baking a coin - or chemically treating it.

If the newer albums [ Intercept Shield ] were available back in the early 1990's - I would have bought them.
Then all my Dimes would have been white and shiny and all graded.
    image

Once I've completed posting my recently graded raw coins, I should have the images of my pre-certified
Dime images available. I will amend this Thread and post the other Dimes images side by side to their
    date counterparts.

The side by side comparison should be interesting.

Stay tuned - I'll post a few more this evening when I'm home from work.

EDIT: To answer your question as to the AU 58's now in XF 45 holders -
based on the 45's I see already holdered - I feel my grades are off by
at least 5 to 8 points. All the 45's I see available - or in sets for that matter -
have no luster left to them - and are dull grey from circulation. Not so with
my coins - all have ample luster under the toning. Maybe they net graded my
    45's for the toning.

    So, yes, I was disappointed. I paid strong AU money for the coins 15 years ago;
now most of the coins are valued considerably less than what I paid for them.
I never expected to make a huge profit on these coins when it came time to sell
but at least I'd like to have broken even. [ which is really a 50% loss - based on
    the value of money .]

Thanks for the compliments - I've enjoyed putting the set together -
and although I never thought I'd ever get these coins holdered - I
finally decided to, as its virtually impossible to locate certified coins
for the dates I'm missing in AU 58. As it turned out - I only got one
AU 58 upgrade that I needed - the 1906-O. The other AU 58's I received

I located a nicer looking PCGS 58 - and again, didn't want to
crack that one out either. I recently sold off the NGC 58.
The PCGS 58 coin is at BluCCphotos being imaged.

EDIT to mention - the 1909-S is without a doubt one of the
most difficult dates to locate in grades AU 53-58. I'm thrilled
that Casey offered me his coins before they were put on eBay.

Again, a very special thank you to Casey for selling me his fantastic

Do you agree with the grades you got back from PCGS?

Has your grading skills improved/changed enough that you
would have disagreed with the grades the buyers told you
the coins were when you bought them?

Do you think you'd have a better chance recovering your costs
if you sold the coins the way you bought them - raw?

<< <i>Do you agree with the grades you got back from PCGS?

    MFH:
    Once I get the coins back - I'll study each one more closely;
    you've got to consider, I bought these from dealers I trusted;
all I knew is that I liked each coin I bought. If I didn't I would have sent
the coin back. So, at this exact moment - I have to reserve judgement
on the grade PCGS gave the coins. My initial reaction was that they wre
    very tough on the coins.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Has your grading skills improved/changed enough that you
would have disagreed with the grades the buyers told you

    MFH:
My grading skills have improved and again, once I
have the coins back in hand, I'll be better able to assign
the grade I think the coin is. Based on images of other
Barber Dimes I have seen already graded by PCGS in XF 45,
mine look superior in the same grade. Then again, everyone
knows owning a coin increases the grade a few points - LOL.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you think you'd have a better chance recovering your costs
if you sold the coins the way you bought them - raw? >>

    MFH:
I seriously doubt I'll recoup the value of the 1995 money I
    have invested in this collection; the "downgrades" are a loss;
the only saving grace of getting my money back is the fact
that these coins are all knock outs because of the toning.

My friend, PonyExpress8, previewed my raw set before it
was sent to PCGS for grading. He's a "No Holes Barred" kind
of guy and calls it the way he sees it. He sent me a very indetailed
description of each date. Again, owning the coin gives it a few
points bump...and he and I will discuss this set further once I
have it in hand - and I compare his notes to my own.

    Hope that answers your questions.

    Thanks everyone for your imput.

    1913-S Dime - No Grade @ PCGS - UNC Details @ NGC
Purchased from JJ Teaparty - raw - in 1996 - as an AU 55.

Image included in the second page of the Dansco.
This really is a wonderful coin and I'm still scratching
my head as to why it didn't holder. Small mark on cheek.
Looked dipped but retoning very nicely. Not cleaned and
the mark on the cheek shouldn't have kept out of a grade.
    Seems as if both PCGS and NGC agreed - its a cleaned UNC coin;
possibly JJ Teaparty net graded the coin as it was for the Dansco.

Great coins and nice effort with this thread...thanks for sharing! The 95-S and 97-S are my favorites image XF-45 on that 95?...seems harsh from the photo, quite a bit of detail remains on it in my opinion.

The 1895-P is in an AU 50 holder.

Glenn previewed this coin and thought
it could have just as easily gone to AU 53.

Thank you very much for providing us with the opportunity to view your beautiful set of Barber Dimes.

Had you submitted your set to ANACS, you probably would have been satisfied with the grades. I am not at all surprised at the results you got with your PCGS submission, in fact, I think you did very well with PCGS. If I would have been the submitter, all he** would have broken loose. My experience with PCGS this past year has been that anything not DEFINITELY natural toning gets bagged, even if on a crossover. I am convinced PCGS simply will not grade anything unless it has most definite natural toning. That leaves out most Bust Half Dollars.

I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
