Today, while preparing a sub, I added another card to my list of cardboard victims that I have damaged. This time, a gorgeous 57 Mays saw its lower left corner bent all up while removing it from a holder. This adds to the 62 Ed Bauta and 54 Eddie Mathews.

I am such an idiot. I cannot tell you how mad I am right now. And if you saw this card, you would call me an idiot as well.

I hate this hobby.

Don't feel bad. i put a huge scrape hole across the front of a 1964 Mays card that was amazing (4 sharp corners, no sign of trimming or altering and no creases) trying to get it out of a plastci snap tight. Never use a screwdriver on those plastics snap tights.

I hate to say it but anyone who damages their card is deserved to be labeled an idiot or careless, a combination of both, 50/50, 80/20.

Of course the name calling is all in fun til someone pokes their eye out.

It was totally careless and totally stupid. I have a "safe" way of cracking holders, but I decided to use the "fast" way first. There were 3 to crack. The first 2 popped using the fast method, the last one, containing the Mays, was stubborn and I paid for it.

The dollars I just lost are irrelevant to me, I just damaged a 53 year old piece of history by being as careless as a ten year old.

That would be a good idea, but I'm hoping you wouldn't need it so often that this would be necessary. I wish someone would develop a method to crack a BGS slab without losing an eye or a digit.

Sorry this happened.

I don't understand why there's a need to crack holders for cross-over or re-submission.

I just let SGC crack and cross-over PSA cards when they're already in the holder. I trust their objectivity.

Ron, that does suck. But look on the bright side, at least it wasn't a 1951 Bowman Mays. You really would be kicking yourself over that.

it would add to their bottom line via sale of the machine, and via Resubmits...

Never to be careless when cracking slabs. You'd think I'd have learned that before now.

I'm going to try and turn a negative into a positive here. I went ahead and sent the card in anyway, it'll be a 3 now if I'm lucky. When it returns, I will sell or auction the card off on the BST with 100% of the proceeds going to charity.

Do any of you know what PSA / SGC / Beckett use to crack open their slabs? I can't imagine they're using the hammer and putty knife method.
