Alloy/Copper streaks on modern gold & PCGS Guarantee

drfishdrfish Posts: 948 ✭✭✭✭
I was looking at my collection and was quite disappointed to find that my 08 W Buffalo $50 pr70 is developing multiple red streaks/spots(at least four on each side of the coin and a whopper on the Indian's temple-pretty unattractive). Is this issue covered by PCGS's guarantee? If the coin is conserved will the streaks/spots recur?....This is the third modern gold PCGS coin I've seen with this issue(07 pr and 08 pr $50 Buffalo and a 07 Jefferson unc $10),I haven't run across this issue with NGC slabbed modern gold, have you? Thanks,Steve

It is very unusual for this to happen with the Buffalo gold. Perhaps 1% or 2% of my Buffalo gold has developed minor streaks or tone.

I had a nice 1989 1/2 oz. AGE that was nice until slabbed. Within a year, it developed splotchy toning. The "spot review" removed the toning, but now the coin looks "scrubbed", for lack of a better description. Not sure what to think about all that.

    Previous thread.

To answer your question, no I have never seen gold tone in an NGC holder. Unfortunately, I have seen lots of PCGS 69s in NGC 70 holders. --Jerry

Talked to the PCGS rep and he was very helpful-he said to send the coin in for review and that they would make it right or buy the coin(no hedging at all)I asked him if PCGS had any theories on the cause and he and no info on that topic.I'll try to post a photo before I mail the coin to PCGS and will definitely post an update with the outcome.
