Winner will probably complain about the cost of shipping.

Well, don't start auctions at a penny unless it is an in-demand item. Then I start at .99 because it is the same price and saves time for the bidders. --Jerry
it is hard to send a PCGS slab for under $3 gross, but I have

<< <i>Have you ever started a no reserve auction with very decent material, only to feel...robbed?
I got shafted on a FBL MS65/66 Franklin this past week. Its in an MS67FBL NNC holder overgraded by 1 maybe 2 but definetly FBL and booming luster. Bought the coin from Michael Dixon. After fees and all that Ill get less than melt for it as it sold for 10$
>>
I have had ZERO issues with auctioning material with $0.99 start and no reserve - but I don't auction much that has lower than $50-$60 value and usually greater than a couple hundred.
No one is going to pay $1.85 shipping along with a decent bid for a coin worth melt on eBay. With free shipping, the coin MIGHT have brought a buck twenny. The only way - and I won't do it - to make money on eBay selling raw is to lie and grossly overgrade - or get absolutely lucky.
$10 for a common date Unc. Franklin in a bottom feeder slab is about right - no one on eBay buys a "pedigreed" NNC holder.
Such a coin would sell for slider money IMO. Thet's eBay for you.

And what's that all about, anyway - Priority shipping for a few dollar item? Why not First Class - take an extra day or two, third of the cost. Might be able to offer those culls for 5 bones.

After paying the shipping the seller would have been ahead to sell it for melt.
<< <i>The better lesson here is if you plan to sell absolute junk on eBay be prepared to lose money on it. The coin sold for exactly what it is worth. >>
That pretty much sums it up. Well stated

Last time I check melt was $1.20 so 35 cents less the 35 cents to paypal and 45 cents to ebay leaves me better off throwing it in the trash!
I will put it out there - send 100,00 of these at $1.20 and I will buy ever last one of them - then take of the .35 each for paypal, the .10 to list them and and 30 cents to ebay that drop the net to 45 cents each - at that price I would put out and offer to buy 1 million of them, $450,000 to the first person who want to sell them. Cold green cash.
I sold them just because I needed to add volume of transactions for feedback so I really don't give a crap what I sell them for, all long as I get them there fast I will save 100X the loss when I put 100k of duplicates up next month
BUT....
It is a warning on what can happen.
By the way as to the comment on the $8 BIN as a way to sell junk ... read the feedback the buyers left on that sale. I sent a $30 XF/AU coin to the guy for having the guts to trust me I would send something good. With 3500 seated dimes I love to get rid of them.
The purpose of the post is not that I am mad about $1.25 (or really 45 cents) trust me, I don't need the money, but say it was a real coin worth $500 or $5000 - you could get burned bad!!

Melt is $1.20 and the buyer paid $2.20. So the coin has a small numismatic premium over melt. As I said, it sold for exactly what it's worth.

If it was worth $500 or $5000 then it would sell for that much, therefore you wouldn't get burned. Barring power outages, crazy misspellings, or cheap BINs, coins on eBay sell for what they're worth.
