Is this a normal "7" on this 1897 cent?

Looks like a repunched 7 to my eyes.

    Nice pic too!

It looks like a "triple punch" to me. After looking through
the Snow book the only one close seems to be S-20,
which was attributed to Tom DeLorey, but it was a
    moderate repunching.
Looks like all the digits are fatter.
    Very interesting.

Is the olive leaf and right shield point connected to the denticles
and the left shield point away?

Here's a not so good image of the whole coin. The color is off but hopefully this helps. I'm mainly a World coin collector and really don't know much about Indian cent errors or varieties. Would this make the coin more valuable? or is it of interest only. Thanks again.

    Don't know about values.
You might want to get a larger, clearer image & send
it to Rick Snow. Can't hurt.

Just a friendly suggestion- call PCGS and NGC- see if they recognize and will grade any IHC varieties from 1897. It does look like a fairly significant repunced 7- among IHC collectors, it likely has some interest

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Indians are my bag, baby and I'm not seeing it. Can you get a closer picture? The die is worn that's for sure.

PCGS and NGC probably won't be able to help as it would be a minor variety at best (but maybe a new variety-- which is cool).

If you're sure its re-punched, then send it to Rick Snow for attribution. Its only $4 plus s/h

It looks like post strike damage to me. Of course, having it in hand to examine might change my mind.

Looks like a normal 7 with some damage at the left end. Not a variety IMO.
