Restoration of 1968 mint set halfs.
Many mint set coins and especially those from 1968 are severely damaged by
spotting, corrosion, or an unattractive film. This last applies especially to the
half dollars and a similar one on the quarters.
I was able to remove this film or mitigate it with a 16 hour soak in a 50% sol-
ution of isopropyl alcohol on about half the half dollars and a third of the quar-
ters.
Has anyone had better results with another technique?
The Philly pennies are pretty much a total loss now days. I don't know where
future collectors are going to find gems of these. I've seen a few nice coins in
rolls but can't recall ever seeing well struck gems. These aren't extremely hard
rolls to find so there may be a few out there.
