Back to Basics, Box of 100 Raw...

I'm thinking of starting a Box of 100, Raw and off of Ebay just for fun...

Mostly XF Grade and with a story, slabing is not a concern or desire...

Slight scratches, cleaning, rim dings, holded and such are acceptable as long as the coin has eye appeal...

Here's the kicker, all must be $100 or less, some can cost more and some less but must average $100 at the end of the day...

Lots of good material out there and fields of areas untouched especially on the dark side...

Anyone out there thinking/doing something like this...?

Other thoughts are welcome...

I have been working on a box of 77 for close to 5 years. With extras the box now has well over 100 coins all mercs. Most were purchased on ebay at very reasonable prices. Its great fun if you take your time. A couple of these will cost well over 100 bucks though.

I think it's sounds like fun! Not a good way to make money, - but fun.
And, add me to the list of guys that want one of those boxes...

That's a thought and one that crossed my mind as that's how I normally collect...

I could lower the bar to $50 or do the box of 50 to lower the cost...

They come in a 50 box with 5 shelves or 100 box with 10 shelves...

I think after 4 or 5 years you could put together a very nice working set that would have great memories...

Here's the link to the box, at bottom of page...

For an idea- how about focusing on 20 century classic designs-----buffs, merc's walkers, standing libs...............Some of the greatest designs during some of the most interesting times in our history...........just a thought...............MJ

Sounds like the coins I collect from change and put in an ash tray.
That silver box is kind of tacky, imo. Wouldn't be cought dead with one.

Haven't counted to see if it's 100 coins or some other number, but I obviously like your idea

  • I'm thinking a little older and not something you would put in an ash tray...

Case in point, under $50 Delivered...

I like the box, although I quoestion buying problem coins, I could fill said box with $50-100 problem free crusty stuff that I would really enjoy.

    sounds like fun!

you have to ask yourself if you are doing this as 'hobby' or 'investment'

if the answer is hobby, then enjoy and buy coins that tickle your fancy

realize however, that since you mention not being averse to purchasing problem coins this may not be a very liquid way to park $10k (if that is something that doesnt bother you then collect away and have fun!!)

I think you could have a lot of fun with such a collection - especially on the darkside.

A lot of coins with great design and eye appeal can be had in that price range.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
  • Thanks for the input everyone...

Love the Dime Board Ken, very well matched...

Problem free and Crusty is the goal, just saying I will not be super critical about it...

Take the 8 Reales I posted, it has problems but what a story it can tell...

Thinking about doing a World Collection with the 10 shelve box, making each shelve a different country...

USA, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Russia, Great Britain, Japan is what I have so far...

I'll pick two other countries for the last two shelves or leave them open for odd ball coins that do not fit in the top 8 shelves...

I'm liking this more and more, will be cool to have on my desk where I can play with them any time...

Quit clouding the issue with good sense Greg...image

But if you think about it... over 4 or 5 years you can sink 10K into other hobbies and have nothing but good memories...

This way I will have something of value at the end, if I'm smart and take my time...

I'm just beginning to open my horizons on the Dark Side of late and I must say I'm Fascinated...
