Your thoughts on this capped bust half?

I purchased this online about eight years ago and have since acquired many more CBHs. I mention this only to say that I'm now much more knowledgeable about what to look for in this series, thanks in large part to the wisdom and gentle/not-so-gentle mentoring I've gained from membership on this forum. I got the coin out today to see how it was doing and thought I'd share it with you all. I won't identify the Overton number in the original post - shouldn't be too hard for the nuts out there. What do you think of the coin? I'd appreciate your thoughts - condition, grade, look, etc Thanks!

VF35 and I don't love the color personally, but I'm sure there are many out there who do.

Off hand cleaned and retoned, possible assistance.

what is the little "dot" on the obverse directly below the "8" between the dentiles? I only mention cause isn't that a sign of a pour rather than a press?

Not a fan of the color either but I give it XF40. There is rub but no distracting marks anywhere that I can see.

I'd show you some of my early purchases, but they are not nearly as nice.

Overall, I think it's a nice looking coin. Perhaps it was once gently cleaned or dipped and re-toned over time. Grade-wise, it looks XF45 at a minimum, to me.
  • Nice coin, nice color, no clue about the grade.

I like it. I wonder if the image color is correct. I'm guessing it's off a bit. Looks to be XF45.

Thanks for the replies so far.

dbcoins - that "dot" is a photo event - nothing noticeable on the coin itself. Your point is good to know, though.

The reverse actually has a decent amount of cartwheeling luster left to it.

    No Overton guesses yet?

    Nice O-113......R4.

I like the toning and it looks like a XF 40-45.

Will you be sending it in for PCGS' opinion?

You nailed it, drddm. Beyond the normal diagnostics for this die marriage are the broken arrow shafts and the missing top to the 5.

This was the first unattributed R4 that I pulled from ebay, so it's a special one in the collection. I remember the elation of the moment when I won the bid and got the R4 for common money. That was a fun moment, and I've enjoyed a similar moment many times since then.

I've kept all of my cbhs raw - I've been a bit of a cracker with a few of them, if you know what I mean. Perhaps 10% of my collection would actually be worth the investment needed to get the coins slabbed, anyway.

Thanks for your take on the coin!

There are many aspects of the various relationships between the placements of devices on the coins that are considered. On the obverse it's the positions of stars 1, 8, and 13 in relation to the dentils and star 7 to the dentil (segment) and the headband/forehead curl. On the reverse it's the alignment of the T and I, as well as the ends of the scroll with the motto and the ED of UNITED and the AM of AMERICA. Other lesser used diagnostics are also considered. On some die marriages, the relationships are evident, if not unique, while on others it can require a bit of detective work to decipher the diagnostics. It's all fun, to the bust half nut. To others, it just seems sort of crazy.

Nice looking coin...probably dipped at one point, but has retoned fairly nicely...it's hard to tell how the surfaces are from a scan, though. Are the surfaces flat or still retaining traces of mint luster underneath?

    Hey zap,
    Nice coin.
I like this die marriage, but it may be a little too common for it's R4 status.
You coin looks like it has been dipped and retoned, but she came back nicely.
    Solid XF grade.
    I got a 113 also for comp.

I'm with the xf crowd, the coin looks a little light in color and may have been lightly cleaned long ago but it has a wonderful look! Nice coinimage
