Are these equivalent coins? An MS64 Plus and an overgraded MS65?

You can substitute any 2 consecutive grades.
Or does the plus have to have high eye appeal as well.
Just food for thought.

Any comments?

    Plus Grades
High end coins for the grade, i.e. "plus" grades, cannot have negative or below average eye appeal for the grade.

There are other ea "rules" but they dont apply to the 64 grade.

    Yes, those could be equivalent.

Agree. A high end 64+ on one day could grade a 65 on the next day. These are liner coins that are on the cusp of the grade and the next higher grade.

Depends on how overgraded that 65 is. If it is really a low end 64 (or even a 63 for that matter) which happened to end up in a 65 slab on the right day then the the 64+ may be a much better coin.

If, on the other hand the 64+ is also overgraded then the overgraded 65 might still be a nicer coin.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I would expect that on average, the 65 should be the better coin. However, I think that someone could easily find an MS65 coin that has worse eye appeal and lower fair market value than a 64+ example of the same coin. We are really splitting hairs here, as the eye appeal will determine the fair market value of both coins, regardless of assigned grade. For example, a pretty toned 64+ will almost always bring more money than a dipped out, barely-made-it 65, whereas a pretty toned 65 with a few bagmarks will bring more than a cleaner 64+ with average eye appeal.

If it's the same coin it's equivalent. If they're two different coins then no.

If the coin is truly "overgraded" and not just on the weak end of 65, these could be the same. It's also entirely possible that if the 65 is overgraded badly enough, a properly graded 64+ will be the nicer coin.
