Gambling on a Moonshot....New pic updated

I was in a gambling mood today and sniped this item, an 1847 Cent, from an afternoon auction on Ebay. I can't tell anything from the photo other than the coin is brown. The lister primarily sells "antiques" and had a couple of other coins with the same NASA style photography. My interest has increased lately in old copper and for around $15, I took the plunge. I will post a closer picture when I get the coin in hand. HM

Well, for $15 not much downside.

I picked off a 45-S Walker for $22 from a "satellite" photo that graded PCGS MS66. Even from that distance I could see the coin had booming luster, so I concluded it was a good gamble.

    Good luck!

Good luck, the important thing with moon shots is the seller feedback and secondly the sellers description.

Most of the time if you know what you are doing, the reward far outweighs the risk.

Here's a bigger picture of the coin you won. In hand it will look better, I think.

At $15, this is a cheap thrill. I love the occassional eBay gamble, too.

I can't tell much from the photo, either.

Please let us know how it turns out.

My last two such gambles didn't turn out too well. I hope you have better luck.

Both of my purchases involved sets of coins in capital holders. Both sets included some decent looking coins inside, but each had one coin with serious problems. The first set included a dug coin that had porous surfaces, the second purchase had a coin with major scratches. I kept the set with the dug coin because returning meant a total loss of postage with nothing to show, while keeping meant buying the coins at about the full retail price. The second set I returned because the scratches were terrible and were on the most valuable coin in the set, and I lost my return postage.

Ebay raw roulette. You're only on the hook for $15. That's plenty of room for upside gain with not much down.

I won't return this coin for any reason. For $15, I'll get a cool pocket piece at the very least. HM

By the look of that photo maybe it is a raw planchet image You have little downside and playing the game on Ebay can be fun when you go into it with the right mind frame. Good luck!

I bought a raw Columbian Half off eBay once that had a weak picture. The ribs on the sails looked strong though. When the coin arrived the ribs had been engraved over to make them stand out in the picture. I left positive feedback for my stupidity and marked it up as a learning experience.

Why positive feedback. The guy deserved something for deceiving me.
