A Trio of MS 65 Morgans. Which one for the Quarterly special?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
Which one would you submit?
All are under yellow light as I couldnt find my ott light.

First one is a 1880s. The huge scratch on the obverse is on the slab. Has nice color and the obverse is proof like. This one is in a OGH.

Next is an 1881s with amazing luster, and one of the best "cheeks" image I have seen.

Last is a 1883o. Also with a nice cheek and luster.

All are really nice, but I dont think you would be able to recover your shipping fees to and from even if one did get the +.Whats the difference between 65 and 65+ for those dates and MM's?

Difficult to say, they all seem to have flaws that might keep them out of the top 15%. Especially considering how common the dates are and the large sample of 65's there are. If I had to choose one, I would probably go with the 81S

It's a freebie, what does it matter? You never know if one of them could be upgraded. image

Ok, so everyone likes the 1881s. now what do you guys think it will grade? ANY chance for a 65+ or a 66?

I say it will either be 65+ or 66. It's a NICE coin.

I haven't seen enough "plussed" coins yet, to have a guess on that.
But, (from the pic,) I'd be kinda surprised if it would 66.

The 81-S has the best chance at an upgrade... go for it!

The 81-s has the best chance of plussing. Also it appears to have some slab scratches that a reslab would take care of.

This thread makes me feel like the + has been around forever.
  • Please let me know what grade you get for the 1880! I have one also in the OGH and am thinking of sending it inn! Here is a photo the cheek as well as the back is in wonderful shape. I wonder if I would get a 65?

Try the 81-S...............Hard to say what's going to be in the top 10-15% of Morgans for the grade on non rare dates/mintmarks.........Good luck and report back! MJ

    1) No chance for a "+"

    2) May get a plus

    3) May get downgraded due to a weak strike

Not worth it to submit common MS-65 Morgans. On coins like that, the Plus will likely be worth $10 to $20 tops, if that.

However, if you want to do it for fun, or to test your grading skills, have at it.
