Laser Scanning and Varieties

The new PCGS Secure Plus service got me thinking about other applications for laser scanning...

Since it presumably can tell if a coin has been modified, I was wondering if it could be used to detect/automate/improve variety attribution.

Thoughts?
Collector of Large Cents, US Type, and modern pocket change.

    I don't see why not. The system would just have to be programmed to recognize the PUPs.

    In reality, yes it should be able to find varieties and attribute right durning the process. I hope they move that way for the service for collectors who use the S+.

    I and perhaps other people asked it in the secure plus q/a thread. I regret doing so. Frankly, in retrospect, I like doing attributions manually; computers perhaps can be used for confirmation or to guide attributions.
