question about PCGS grading

If a vendor is listing coins for sale in the following manner:

"1909 2 1/2 Gold Indian MS62 PCGS"

Does the "PCGS" mean that the coin for sale has been graded by PCGS? And if so, is there some identifying number that that individual coin will have assigned to it? So that a person could verify that coin with PCGS before buying?

It means the seller is claiming it was graded by PCGS. If you can see the entire label in the photo, you can go to this page and enter the certification number (the 7 or 8 digit number on the slab label on the right, above the barcode). That will tell you if that certification number matches the type and grade of coin.

However, there are fakes out there, where people have made reproductions of labels and used inferior coins or even counterfeit coins in slabs that look like genuine slabs. The certification number might even match, but the coin can be a fake. If the seller is in China, run away for sure. But in any event, you need to be careful.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Interesting, the coin started out a 62 and is now a 63.

    question about PCGS grading

If you make arrangements, they will also come to your home or building site and grade the driveway. This is a little known service, but that is actually why they are called “Grading Companies” by most.

The PCGS.com site also has a price guide for their graded coins. I normally look at the guide price as full retail for the coin. You might in some cases have a hard time getting your money back out of it if you pay more.

that is funny! I bet they are pretty expensive!

The expensive part is putting the freshly graded driveway into a biiiiiiiig plastic slab.
