How bad is this? Or, is there any chance it's a good thing??

Of course I'm referring to the color of this boldly struck Buff. This is an amazing strike with complete details, but well, you know....??

That to my eye is about the nicest toned Buff I have ever seen -

The way obverse toning traces the Indian's features makes it almost look like a color portrait - and the color on the reverse is reminiscent of a sunset on the Western range. I have seen color take on allegorical qualities with some classic commems - Gettysburg's, Antietam's, Oregon's, Hawaii's and Bay Bridge's are the obvious ones that come to mind - but I can't think of another Buffalo where the color worked so well to further articulate the theme of the design.

This piece has booming luster and the rims are soooo clean, the details are sharp but as always the colors are a crap shoot...

Looks very nice to me, and based on the photos, I think NT.

Lovely, Joe. Just right. And I'd be surprised if PCGS grades it. Will you try?

If the colors are true to life, I'd be surprised if they didn't grade it.

Edited to add: In answer to the original question - it is very, very bad. But I am willing to take it off your hands.image

Hi Lance, at this point I'm not really sure if I will submit this coin, I have a couple of dozen of these type 1s , "yes I like them that much" the type ! Buffalo nickels I can always find room for another & another if I like what I see. I need to renew my membership with pcgs, so if I go with the platinum membership then maybe it will find it's way down south to get graded.

Don't misunderstand...I'm not condemning it as AT. I simply believe PCGS has swung far the other direction and "genuines" if there's the smallest suspicion.

This is really a beautifully toned Buffalo, for reasons Artist well said. Joe, I'd gladly submit it for you. Holler if interested.
