Secure PLUS will not change how the finest collections are assembled

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
It will change how the average duffer collects. To signify those coins

in the top 15% OF THEIR GRADE, is something the really good dealers

and specialists have long done and now, it will be designated for the

mid range collectors to consider. Sure, it will cost more money, but quality

has always cost more money. Now, you will no longer have to guess, you will

know what PCGS thinks about the coin. For the few PLUS coins we have

seen so far, they look dog gone nice to me.

It won't affect average duffers. It is supposed to make it easier to put finest collections together. --Jerry

Perhaps not, but the finest collections will be in Secure Plus holders.

I agree. The finest collections almost have no choice but to Secure Plus their collections.

I think you are wrong - at least in some series.

    << <i>Maybe not...but it might change how I assemble my collection. >>

The new program doesn't include colonials (at least not yet), so if it changes how you assemble your own collection, that would mean going in a new direction?

I don't think it will affect average collectors at all, most of us average folks aren't going to spend the additional money to get something reslabbed when we are happy with it as is. As for the finest collections? There are some pretty nice collections in NGC holders, and there are some pretty nice collections in no holders.

I think you could narrow it down and say the finest PCGS slabbed collections will be in secure plus holders.

No...no plans to go in a new direction. I'm just optimistic that the program will include colonials eventually.

what i think it will eventually affect is how many of us buy raw coins.

I have no idea why people think that PCGS Secure Plus applies to some coin series and not others. But this is not the first time I've read that misconception.

We have never said that. What we have said is that Secure Plus applies to Service Levels. Sevice Levels - like Express and above. Not coin series.

You can send any coin of any series through Secure Plus via the Express Service level. Or via a Reholder for that matter.

Thanks for clearing that up Don. Good to know!
  • I think that the new plus designation will have a limited impact on most registry sets. I'm 4th in the Indian Proof Cent registry and I have four or five coins I think stand a good chance to get a plus designation. I won't send in the majority of my coins to the Secure Plus, only the likely ones to upgrade to the plus level. I applaud PCGS and do beleive this will reduce gradeflation and better establish prices for higher end coins for their grade.

People will continue to get PQ prices for their PCGS PQ coins at auctions, regardless if attributed or not. The dealers will pay for them figuring the coins will get the secure-plus attribution.

I agree. The finest collections almost have no choice but to Secure Plus their collections.

Do you think Eliasberg, Pittman, Norweb, James Stack, and others really could have cared about secure-plusing their collections if auctioned off today? No. They still would have been sold off raw because that would still fetch them more money.

I think it may change how some collectors think when assembling their collections, but it won't entirely change how they act. Maybe a little, maybe not at all.

With regards to the comment that the finest collections will be in Secure Plus holders....

I don't think Warren Miller is readying his complete collection of bust dollars by variety for submission to PCGS for Secure Plus holders. Finest collections will always be finest collections regardless of what holders the coins are in.

As for the classic raw collections if sold today, I believe most auction houses
would recommend ,that they be graded by one of the two top TPGs.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
