What denominations are you looking to cherrypick?

OK, for a complete picture I believe you will need:
Cherrypickers Guide Fifth Edition Volume 1 (covers half cents through Jefferson nickels) Published 2008.
Cherrypickers Guide Fourth Edition Volume 2 (covers the rest). Published 2007, I think. Fifth edition for Volume 2 isn't out yet.

I don't know when the Fifth Edition Volume 2 is going to come out.

does anyone know of where you can get expanded pics/descriptions of the varieties?

some of the pics are lacking with their close-ups and some of them are just wrong

....good question. SOME can be found, at times, in auction archives. image i don't know of any other competition with

the CPG's. might be a great idea compiling a competitive book or books. could be a lucrative endeavor. image

For more specialized info and better photos, you should go to publications dedicated to the series you are investigating. Cherrypickers' Guide is an overall guide, and can't get into the depths of research that a book dedicated to a single series can.

If you were specifically interested in shield nickels, I'd send you to my website (see sig line). There are other websites devoted to other series.

In addition to specialized websites, there are also books that specialize in one series (check out the Coin Books section of eBay), and there are also clubs that focus on particular series. For example, John Reich Collectors Society focuses on Bust coinage, Liberty Seated Collectors Club focuses on Liberty Seated coinage, and Early American Coppers focuses on colonials, half and large cents. People in those clubs can direct you to the best people who can answer your questions.

  • 1Tommy,

Her is a link to CONECA
There is information on die varieties, double dies and re-punched mint marks
all over the web and in books covering every denomination and series of coin
The more sources you use the more information you can gather.
Even search past threads on this very forum.

Example: A while back I was spending a cold Michigan weekend with
the Kennedy Halves and was looking through some old threads
looking for varieties that had not made it into the Cherry Pickers
or any other books that I have. I ran across an old thread
where a Gentleman I have enormous respect for,Herb Hicks
    was discussing a type 1 and type 2 1971 D Kennedy Half.
I had never heard of it in all my years of collecting.
He informed me that he had written about that particular variety
40 years ago. They are of no real great value money wise,
but I thought it would make a very interesting addition.
I found very nice examples of each type in my very own collection.
I had a great weekend with my Kennedy's and
    Cherry Picked my own collection.
For me it doesn't get much better than that
    Had a blastimage
Now I have noticed I look for them all the time
at the coin shop where I volunteer.

    Hope this helps

    Stew
