One of those tweener coins........

Do you ever have those tweener coins when selling. One of those coins, that if sold raw would most likely leave some money on the table, but not quite worth enough to send in for grading. I'm constantly looking for upgrades for my Anacs certificate type set, and then I sell the coin that the upgrade is replacing.

Here for example:

This 1904 Indian Head Cent. (just an example, not for sale)

The coin was graded in the early 80's by Anacs as MS60/60. Today this coin would most certainly graded MS63RD. If I sold in on Ebay, bidders would most likely only bid on it as MS60, and the coin is clearly better than that. But at the 63RD level, it's not really worth sending in for grading either.

What do you do with coins like this?

I think most of my collection is like that - given the $18 cost of slabbing a coin worth under $300, you'd have to figure you'd need to make a minimum of $20 more selling slabbed vs. selling raw just to break even.

I suppose some 1940s/50s Lincolns that might sell for a few bucks raw would be worth slabbing if they hit a 66 or 67. Big if. If not, then you're out money.

AU Lincolns from the teens, even with mint marks, aren't going to fetch that much more slabbed than they would raw (unless they hit a 58, and most of mine would not).

Sell it completely as a raw mint red IHC since it's not a key/semi-key coin. Spend $6, and have it professionally photograph by Todd "bluvette62", or do it yourself, rather than spending $18 plus the extra fees for handling & insured shipping to have it certified. You would do much better in an auction than have a MS60 grade on it.

I like to keep these coins with the certificate when possible.
